William Stone had a plan for his life. He would marry Olivia Moore, practice medicine in Selma, Alabama, and expand his love of creating anatomical drawings. The Battle of Shiloh in April, 1862 changed those plans. When a Tennessee newspaper brought news of an approaching Union Army, William decided to travel north. He would offer his assistance as a medical officer under the command of John Hunt Morgan. William arrived in Middle Tennessee in time to participate in the Battle of Hartsville. A Union garrison had set up camp around the Averitt House and in the valley below. Morgans forces crossed the Cumberland River before the Union troops had finished their morning coffee on December 7. After capturing the Union brigade and supplies, the Confederated soldiers re-crossed the river completing their mission just prior to the arrival of a larger Union army. William Stone chose to stay in the Averitt house. He would provide care for the wounded soldiers from both sides of the conflict. From there, he would face the brunt of anger incurred by this Union defeat.

In Partisan Journalism: A History of Media Bias in the United States,Jim A. Kuypers guides readers on a journey through American journalistic history, focusing on the warring notions of objectivity and partisanship. Kuypers shows how the American journalistic tradition grew from partisan roots and, with only a brief period of objectivity in between, has returned to those roots today. The book begins with an overview of newspapers during Colonial times, explaining how those papers openly operated in an expressly partisan way; he then moves through the Jacksonian era’s expansion of both the press and its partisan nature. After detailing the role of the press during the War Between the States, Kuypers demonstrates that it was the telegraph, not professional sentiment, that kicked off the movement toward objective news reporting. The conflict between partisanship and professionalization/objectivity continued through the muckraking years and through World War II, with newspapers in the 1950s often being objective in their reporting even as their editorials leaned to the right. This changed rapidly in the 1960s when newspaper editorials shifted from right to left, and progressive advocacy began to slowly erode objective content. Kuypers follows this trend through the early 1980s, and then turns his attention to demonstrating how new communication technologies have changed the very nature of news writing and delivery. In the final chapters covering the Bush and Obama presidencies, he traces the growth of the progressive and partisan nature of the mainstream news, while at the same time explores the rapid rise of alternative news sources, some partisan, some objective, that are challenging the dominance of the mainstream press. This book steps beyond a simple charge-counter-charge of political bias in the news in that it offers an argument that the press in America, except for a brief period, was essentially partisan from its inception and has returned with a vengeance to its original roots. The final argument presented in the book is that this new development may actually be healthy for American Democracy.

Beys devious plan entangles four applicants for the new VP Marketing position. They have been brought in as a group for interviews. As the interviews proceed, they become increasingly aware that something is wrong with the project. What started as competition for a job becomes an ominous involvement leading to violence. Almost by accident, the candidates start the domino effect that leads to the unraveling of Beys plans. In the process, two love stories develop among the applicants. Finally exposed, Bey seeks to escape only to die in a fiery plane crash as he is taking off for the Caymans. There are four principal characters in addition to Darius Bey: Tom Orrick, divorced ex-Bronco defensive back; Elyda Nelson, a beautiful Black woman with limited expectations yet the most eager for the job; Chris Parker, Boston Brahmin, graduate of Hotchkiss School, Yale University, and Harvard Business School, engaged to a Back Bay socialite; Sue Benson, Miss America runner-up, embittered by her hero fathers infidelity. Other characters involved are executive recruiters, Orricks Bronco buddies, and a nubile young Latino who plays to Beys well-known appetites. The story is dialog driven. The location is set in downtown Phoenix, Arizona with sorties to various towns in the Valley. The title derives from the legend (Egyptian) of the ancient Phoenix consumed by flames at midnight but reborn at dawn from its own ashes.

Aden B. Meinel and wife Marjorie P. Meinel stood at the confluence of several overarching technological developments of the 20th century: postwar aerial surveillance by spy planes and satellites, solar energy, the evolution of telescope design, interdisciplinary optics, and photonics. In 1945 he was a Navy Ensign ordered to find the secret tunnels in Nazi Germany where the V-2 rockets menacing Great Britain and Belgium were being manufactured. After receiving both his B.A. degree and Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California at Berkeley within three years, Aden was invited to join the scientific staff at Yerkes Observatory/University of Chicago. While there he was selected by the National Science Foundation to manage the development of a new national observatory on Kitt Peak, Arizona, and served as its first Director. In the early 1960s he founded the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona, which later metamorphosed into the College of Optical Sciences with the doctoral program in interdisciplinary optics. It was here that he also designed the first Multiple Mirror Telescope and with wife Marjorie pioneered the feasibility of solar energy power on a commercial scale. Aden's knowledge and expertise in optics made him invaluable in research on cameras for spy satellites and spy planes overflying the Soviet Union and Southeast Asia. After retirement the Meinels worked for NASA/JPL on the precursor of the James Webb Space Telescope and on the exoplanet program. They also served on the team that corrected spherical aberration in the Hubble Space Telescope"--

Blind to the intrigue and deception swirling around them, the American government preached cooperation and friendship with our wartime allies. It would take bold action. It would take a real actor, but James Cole was up to the role. With his small band of misfits in supporting roles, it would be a world class performance.

The conference was designed to be a key element in the multiphase research review process for the fifth revision of DSM. This book is one in a series of ten that reflects some of the most current and critical examinations of psychiatric disorders and psychotic syndromes. APA published the fourth edition of DSM in 1994 and a text revision in 2000. DSM-V is scheduled for publication in 2013. Deconstructing Psychosis: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V examines the current evidence regarding the diagnosis and pathophysiology of common psychotic syndromes including: Schizophrenia Bipolar disorder Major depressive psychosis Substance-induced psychosis It also addresses broad issues relating to diagnosis such as the ways in which psychosis cuts across multiple diagnostic categories. Beyond merely summarizing the current state of the science, the authors of these papers critique the current research and clinical evidence, and raise questions about gaps in our knowledge. The book provides recommendations for the most promising areas of research in psychosis, which may lead to more refined treatments based on a better understanding of what biological and environmental factors contribute to its development and symptoms. In the learned editors' selection of papers for inclusion in this volume, they have exhibited their conviction that DSM-V is a "living document" that will reflect the pace of progress in multiple areas, ranging from molecular genetics and brain imaging to social, behavioral, and anthropological science. As a book on the narrowly defined topic of linking the classification of psychotic syndromes with their underlying pathophysiology and potential etiology, there is no other writing of comparable content available today.
