Yan Jiaqi, one of the principal leaders of China's pro-democracy movement, and his wife, Gao Gao, a noted sociologist, set out to write a comprehensive narrative account of the Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution, which occurred in the second decade after Mao Zedong and his comrades came to power. It appeared in Hong Kong in 1986, and was quickly banned by the Communist government. Not surprisingly, censorship and restricted circulation in China resulted in underground reproduction and serialization. The work was thus widely read, coveted, and appreciated by a populace who had just freed itself from the cultural drought and political dread of the event. Yan and Gao later spent two years revising and expanding their work. The present volume, Turbulent Decade: A History of the Cultural Revolution, is based on the revised edition and has been masterfully edited and translated by D.W.Y. Kwok in consultation with the authors. It makes available for the first time in English Yan and Gao's remarkable record of the traumatic Cultural Revolution decade and remains the only single-volume narrative history of the revolution written from an independent and personal perspective. It is a sweeping historical account, notable for its moral courage, for its empathy, for the significance of the questions it addresses, and for its sobering, ultimately tragic view of human behavior.
During the 1980s, as director of the Political Science Institute at the Chinese Academy of Social Science - China's most prestigious think-tank - Yan Jiaqi proposed many of the political reforms undertaken by the Chinese government, including term limitations for high-level officials, separation of party and state, and creation of a civil service system. In this book, Yan summarizes the thinking behind these and other reforms yet to be adopted on China's difficult path to democracy. Originally published in 1989, Yan's account of his early training in science, the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen Incident of 1976, and the Democracy Wall Movement of 1978-79 gives a frank appraisal of the formative events in the intellectual development of one of China's preeminent political scientists. In new chapters written for this edition, he also describes the momentous events of the spring of 1989, culminating in his escape from China following the June 4 massacre and his subsequent life in exile. Supplementing Yan's narrative is a selection of essays representing different facets of this exceptionally cosmopolitan Chinese thinker, including several pieces written since June 1989 which reflect on recent Chinese history and give Yan's view of China's prospects for the 1990s.
This book systematically introduces the key technologies for differentiated resourceful utilization of rural organic wastes based on high-efficiency anaerobic fermentation and bio-augmented composting, and discusses differentiating sources of organic wastes, integrating recycling technologies, developing key equipment, and researching management mechanisms. In addition, it describes the development of viable techniques and low-pollution, low-cost, and low-maintenance equipment. It also includes the technical specifications for the differentiated resourceful utilization of rural organic wastes and presents the energy-fertilizer integrated resourceful utilization method for rural organic wastes. Providing technological insights into improving the resourceful utilization level of rural organic wastes, this book is a valuable reference resource for administrative staff, researchers in the field of environmental protection, and technicians in enterprises involved in the treatment and disposal of solid wastes.
The fall of the Berlin Wall in the 1990s and the rise of the internet heralded a profound transformation in the century's spirit. The 21st century is the era of the information revolution and, indeed, the century of America’s greatness. The Mission of the American President is to look toward the future with lofty goals, great vision, and global responsibility. Human history is shaped by heroes or ambitious figures who grasp the direction of history or by prevailing ideologies. Science encompasses humanity's highest rationality, while religion reflects the most profound emotions. Science is not faith; religion embodies human beliefs. Religious conflicts can lead to a "clash of civilizations" and trigger wars. Political ideology (PI) encompasses reason, emotion, and belief. When anger dominates political life, reason cannot control emotion, leading to violent conflict. Between nations or hostile regimes, this can result in war. Within a country, it may provoke internal violence. In democratic nations, outstanding political leaders are characterized by far-reaching vision and broad-mindedness, replacing emotional anger with rational spirit. This book introduces the "theory of three worlds," positing that the material world and the world of ideas comprise the real world, while outside the real world, there exists a transcendent world that does not rely on human perception. From the perspective of "MetaHistory," the 21st century is the century of the information revolution and, consequently, the century of America, the most powerful force driving this revolution.
This book is a comprehensive introduction on infrared anti-transparent materials and their applications in anti-reflective and protective coatings.
