The XIX Physics in Collision conference reviewed experimental results in electroweak, quantum chromodynamics, neutrino, bottom and rare kaon physics, and updated recent developments in the area of gamma ray bursts as well as the issue of the cosmological constant and dark matter.The conference opened with reports on electroweak physics. A decade of precision experiments in laboratories around the world failed to uncover any significant deviations from standard model predictions. Precise W boson and top quark mass measurements suggest a low mass Higgs boson in the standard model, possibly within the reach of the LEP II and the upgraded Tevatron colliders. These presentations were followed by a summary of the latest results on searches for Higgs and supersymmetry.There were three reports on neutrino physics: atmospheric, solar and reactor/accelerator based neutrino experiments and results. Impressive Super-K results strongly suggest ????? oscillation, a scenario confirmed by less precise Soudan2 and MACRO data.The latest results on strange and heavy quark physics were summarized. High statistics from CLEO, LEP I and Tevatron have enabled experimenters to study many rare charm and bottom quark decays for the first time. The first two chapters discuss expressions of number, quantity, time and place in Singapore Mandarin and touch upon the differences in these expressions between Singapore and Chinese Mandarin (Putonghua). Composite sentences are then analysed, covering seven types of compound sentences and eight types of complex sentences, as well as connective words with a focus on conjunctions. The final part of the volume analyses the characteristics of Singapore Mandarin grammar compared with Chinese Mandarin, on the level of phrase, lexicon and sentence. Puxian is one of the Min dialects in China. This book investigates the function of pronominal expressions in Puxian, focusing especially on three prominent issues in the linguistic literature, viz. impersonal reference, self-forms and person effects on word order. The investigation of impersonality deals with a group of constructions in Puxian that have pronominalized subjects but crucially with impersonal reference. By means of careful examination, these subjects are, for the first time, projected onto five semantic domains on a connected loop. The discussion on self-forms in Puxian focuses on their interrelated functions along the pathway of grammaticalization, such as reflexivity, intensification, viewpoint markings, verbal manner, etc. Significantly, this discussion is based on the latest functional-typological perspectives, which is different from previous approaches to Mandarin ziji. The attention to word order and person effect is related to the polyfunctional morpheme k?21, which plays a part in several constructions, ranging from the monotransitives, ditransitives, causatives, passives and even to the intransitives. The main concern is how the grammatical category of person as a whole may affect the placement of syntactic constituents as well as encodings of argument roles by means of the morpheme k?21. Since Puxian has been relatively unknown in linguistics, a sketch of Puxian grammar and language situation is also offered in this book.
