Based on an essay he wrote for Poets & Writers magazine, Jesse Browner, a novelist who finds himself torn between his creative calling and a full-time job in the civil service, asks hard questions about the choices life imposes on us, and our tendency to believe in a parallel, alternative existence where we might have felt more fulfilled, more free, more true to ourselves. He wonders: Is the genuine artist made by single-minded devotion to his craft? Do we compromise our dreams in service to family and work? In the face of life's inevitable disappointments, how do we learn to reassess our own achievements and live without regret? These questions prompted Browner to take a hard look at the lifelong journey that brought him to this moment of existential doubt. He divides his adult life into five distinct phases: ambition, love, work, fulfillment, and wisdom. Sketching portraits of himself at each stage, he looks for the idiosyncrasies, blind spots, and commonalities that led him to question every assumption he has ever made about who he is and the nature of his ambitions, his successes, and his failures. He also draws on the lives of others, from Franz Kafka to indie rocker Elliott Smith to his own sister, in search of understanding and guidance. What he finds in his courageous quest is inspiring and honest—sometimes brutally so—touching on what it means to live a life with intention and meaning.

This book is an easy read (I deliberately chose a large font). Wesley Walker graduated high school right on the cusp of integration. Wilt Chamberlain was being aggressively recruited by the legendary Phog Allen that year. Walker, despite being a highly talented player, never played high school basketball. In the local city leagues, where he was omnipresent, he truly shined. He cosistently scored high, was a positive team player, and is fondly remembered by many from that time for generously sharing his acumen for the game. He was recruited by the Harlem Globe Trotter's farm team, the Jesters. If he had been properly "groomed" by good coaches, or recruited by the University of Kansas at that time, he might have played with Wilt Chamberlain. He should have been recruited at least by one of the Black colleges.The game was changing to a fast break one, and Walker played that kind of game. However, he went into the army instead. There he developed into quite a boxer. His development was cut short by a tragic car wreck, in which he almost lost a leg. Walker fought back, and became a wheelchair champ. In later years, he opened a local gym, and is beloved today by many who personally felt his influence.

This is a coming of age story that chronicles my early years growing up in inner-city, Brooklyn, New York amidst the turbulent, racially and socially explosive 1960s. The Civil Rights Movement was in full swing and while many older Negroes supported Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his calls for peaceful protests, many young Negroes gravitated to a more militant and confrontational approach to winning freedom and equal treatment under the law for all Negroes. Young people were constantly being called upon to be down with the revolution and encouraged to hate Whitey and to fear the Police in particular who were looked upon as an occupying force within the Negro community. All of this was swirling around me as I struggled to just be a kid. I certainly didn't hate anyone and my being bussed to a White school only served to complicate things as I found myself eventually feeling trapped in my own community and walking a tightrope between two diverse cultures. Surprisingly, I found peace, friendship and acceptance in the most unlikely of places. My years in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn were both character building and life changing and laid the foundation for my becoming the man that I am today. This story is told through the eyes of a precocious and intelligent little boy and it's told with humor and love. It is my hope that while you're reading this book you will get a strong sense of the love I had for my family, my community and the new world of friendships that embraced me. Being away from my mother's watchful eye offered me a newfound freedom but it also demanded that I grow up quickly, keep my wits about me and utilize everything I'd ever learned.
