Jerry Parkinson spent nearly ten years, from 2000 to 2010, as a member of the NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infractions, participating in over one hundred major infractions cases. He came away from that experience—and the experience of reading extensive commentary on infractions cases—with the conviction that most observers do not understand the NCAA’s rules-enforcement process, despite the amount of public attention many major cases receive. Parkinson uses his insider’s perspective, along with illustrative stories, to help readers understand how the NCAA’s rules-enforcement process really works. These stories include: a university board of trustees chair committing suicide over an infractions case; a pay-for-play scandal leading directly to the state’s governor; a head coach falsely portraying a deceased player as a drug dealer to cover up the coach’s own misconduct; a gambler laundering his money by making the largest booster payments in NCAA history; and a coach’s sexual abuse of children leading to some of the harshest sanctions ever imposed by the NCAA. Based on years of experience and infused with insight, Parkinson provides a broad view of the world of NCAA rule breakers and the NCAA rules-enforcement process.

I thought I needed to get some ads in the local newspaper. That led to my meeting Mr Rowe Ray, the managing editor of the San Marcos Daily Record. I simply wanted to explore possibilities but ended with an invitation to write a weekly column for the newspaper. I can honestly say I never broke my word on confidentiality; i.e., everything we talked about stayed in the Center, everything that is except the funny things. I was counseling with a game warden that told me about a lady who was losing a sheep a night to one old hungry coyote. Whenever the warden came out, she would start feeling sorry for the coyote and asked the warden not to shoot it. Finally she had five sheep left. She called the warden and once again told him she wasn't ready to have him hunt down the coyote. The warden looked at the little flock of sheep and said, "Mrs. Jones, whatever you say, but we've only got five more days anyway." As you read this book there will be tears and sunshine. The good news is you don't have to sit down and read it all at once. Life Really Is Like That.

CARADOC AGAINST THE SAXONS The occupation of Britain by the Romans from 43 AD to 476 AD resulted in most of Wales including the Silurian kingdom of Gwent in southeastern Wales being conquered. Caradoc Freichfras, King of Gwent in 550 AD, was aware of how the Romans defeated Caratacus, Silurian king in 52 AD, Boadecia, Queen of the Iceni British tribe in 60 AD, and later the Caledonians and Picts of Scotland, from what his ancestors told him. As the Romans left and the Saxons arrived at the invitation of Vortigern, the High-King of Britain, to fight the northern tribes of Scotland as they raided England, he was also aware of how the British tried to stop the subsequent invasion of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes into the southern Britain about 410 AD to 550 AD. Not wanting his homeland of Gwent to be taken by the aggressive Saxons, Caradoc and other Welsh kings stopped the Saxon advance at the battle of Tintern Forest in southeastern Wales in 584 AD and the Saxons never returned to the land claimed by the Celts as early as 600 BC.

The phrase "high technology" is perhaps one of the more overused descriptions in our technical vocabulary. It is a phrase generally reserved for discussion of integrated circuits, fiber optics, satellite systems, and computers. Few people would associate high technology with vacuum tubes. The notion that vacuum tube construction is more art than science may have been true 10 or 20 years ago, but today it's a different story. The demand on the part of industry for tubes capable of higher operating power and frequency, and the economic necessity for tubes that provide greater efficiency and reliability, have moved power tube manufacturers into the high-tech arena. Advancements in tube design and construction have given end users new transmit ters and RF generators that allow industry to grow and prosper. If you bring up the subject of vacuum tubes to someone who has never worked on a transmitter, you are likely to get a blank stare and a question: "Do they make those anymore?" Although receiving tubes have disappeared from the scene, power tubes are alive and well and are performing vital functions in thousands of divergent applications. Solid-state and tube technologies each have their place, each with its strengths and weaknesses. Tube design and development, although accompanied by less fanfare, is advanc ing as are developments in solid-state technology. Power tubes today are designed with an eye toward high operating efficiency and high gain/bandwidth properties.
