The Radio Eye: Cinema in the North Atlantic, 1958–1988, examines the way in which media experiments in Quebec, Newfoundland, the Faroe Islands, and the Irish-Gaelic-speaking communities of Ireland use film, video, and television to advocate for marginalized communities and often for “smaller languages.” The Radio Eye is not, however, a set of isolated case studies. Author Jerry White illustrates the degree to which these experiments are interconnected, sometimes implicitly but more often quite explicitly. Media makers in the North Atlantic during the period 1958–1988 were very aware of each other’s cultures and aspirations, and, by structuring the book in two interlocking parts, White illustrates the degree to which a common project emerged during those three decades. The book is bound together by White’s belief that these experiments are following in the idealism of Soviet silent filmmaker Dziga Vertov, who wrote about his notion of “the Radio Eye.” White also puts these experiments in the context of work by the Cuban filmmaker and theorist Julio García Espinosa and his notion of “imperfect cinema,” Jürgen Habermas and his notions of the “public sphere,” and Édourard Glissant’s ideas about “créolité” as the defining aspect of modern culture. This is a genuinely internationalist moment, and these experiments are in conversation with a wide array of thought across a number of languages.

This fast paced historical thriller takes place against the background of a rising Fenian movement in the United States and the overt hostility of Washington toward the 'Canadas' immediately after the American Civil War. The Fenian Brotherhood was dedicated to the freeing of Ireland from 'British tyranny'. Conquering Britain's holdings in North America (and coincidently preventing Confederation) was their aim. A Canadian agent in Buffalo uncovers a Fenian plot against the 'life and liberties' of the United Province of Canada that was to take place on or about St. Patrick's Day, 1866. However, he meets with foul play before he can pass this information on to Gilbert McMicken, Canada's spy chief in Windsor. McMicken informs John A. MacDonald, who as Attorney-General of Canada West and the Minister of Militia Affairs, must prepare for some sort of attack. MacDonald has much on his plate and many distractions - from Confederation plans in a precarious state to a clandestine affair with Luce, a mysterious lady he had just met. McMicken sends his best agent to Buffalo to investigate while William H. Seward, the American Secretary of State, who too has a vested interest in Fenian activities, assigns a secret service agent to ferret out what the Fenians are really up to. Alas, the two agents are working at cross purposes. From Buffalo, Washington and New York to Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, they follow a trail of intrigue and subterfuge that comes to a dramatic climax in Ottawa and Montreal.

Increasing interest in the immunology of mucosal surfaces is obvious from the number of publications in scientific journals and from the frequency of national and international symposia devoted to this subject. Particularly encouraging are the large numbers of young investigators who have chosen to work in this area of theoretical immunology with profound practical implications. The two volumes represented here are the result of an International Congress Of Mucosal Immunology held at the Niagara Falls Convention Center and the Niagara Falls Hilton on June 29 - July 3, 1986. This satellite meeting of the International Congress of Immunology placed emphasis on all aspects of the Mucosal Immune System. This included the regulation of differentiation of mucosal lymphocytes, mucosa-associated lymphoreticular tissue and lymphocyte homing, the immunology of mucosa associated tissues and glands, effector functions in mucosal immunity, and the effects of environmental antigens on the immune response, all of which are included in Volume I. The second volume has emphasized studies of the immune response and effector functions, IgA biosynthesis and transport, IgA proteases and effector functions, developmental aspects and immunodeficiency, the immunopathology of IgA and mucosal immunoprophylaxis. A total of 218 papers are included in these two volumes and a comparison to past meetings held at four to five year intervals indicates the explosive growth of mucosal immunology.
