Along the way, some settled in hamlets and scarcely populated communities in East and Middle Tennessee. Most continued to press onward, seeking inexpensive farmland, abundant fresh water, and the opportunity to live the American Dream.

If President Lincoln could have unmade a general, perhaps he would have started with Samuel Peter "Sourdough" Heintzelman, whose early military successes were overshadowed by a prickly disposition and repeated Union defeats during the Civil War." "By the time his friend Robert E. Lee left Arlington to lead a Rebel army against the bluecoats, Heintzelman had already seen duty in Mexico, established Fort Yuma in California in 1850, mined for silver in Arizona, and ably led U.S. forces on the Texas-Mexico border during the 1859-60 Cortina War. During the Civil War, he was in the forefront of the fighting at First Bull Run and the disastrous 1862 Peninsula Campaign. He commanded the III Corps of the Army of the Potomac at the siege of Yorktown and in the ferocious fighting at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Oak Grove, Savage's Station, Glendale, and Malvern Hill. Although he aspired to succeed Gen. George B. McClellan, he was relieved of his command after his troops were badly mauled at Second Bull Run. After demonstrating his inability to guard the southern approaches to Washington, D.C., from Virginia guerillas, he spent the latter part of the war administering prison camps in the Midwest, keeping a watchful eye on Copperhead subversives, and quarreling with more than one disgruntled governor. In early Reconstruction Texas, Heintzelman struggled with the conflict between former Secessionists and Radical Republicans."--BOOK JACKET.

Zeb Pierce, D.A., is faced with re_election, opposed by Noble Stein, a young, popular, third_generation lawyer from a large firm named Lee, Stein, Brown, & Harris. Before Zeb can decide whether he´ll run again, suddenly four business men are found murdered with viper venom. Their nude bodies are found one a week apart and in different rooms of the Riverside Hotel. A viper´s head is drawn with lipstick on each bathroom mirror. The town raises_up in fear of a serial killer. Zeb can´t find a clue. The elected officials blame him for not making an arrest. Zeb and his assistant, Madge, make a two day trip into the Bienville National Forest to visit an old hermit who is supposed to know more about vipers than anyone around. This trip is a winter wonderland excursion; but they find the old hermit, Elmer Crook, and gain evidence about an unidentified horsewoman who contracted with the old hermit for a supply of viper venom. Chancery Judge Bullard becomes the fifth victim and Zeb begins to think he´s on the wrong road to a solution; that it´s not a serial killer. The fact that the Mayor´s political cronies are getting jittery over how the newly appointed Chancellor Clark will rule on a law affecting gambling suggest to Zeb that gambling interest are involved. After Judge Bullard becomes the fifth victim, the Mayor demands that Zeb make an arrest. The only evidence Zeb has incriminates his girlfriend, Deborah. As a lawyer, Deborah confessed to Zeb previously that she had represented some gambling companies. A search warrant secured by the Mayor, and conducted by the city police, turns up a signed copy of deceased Judge Bullard´s unfiled opinion in Deborah's possession. Deborah, being the last one to see Judge Bullard alive, becomes a prime suspect. The Mayor demands Deborah´s arrest and Zeb prosecutes her reluctantly. Knowing in his mind she is innocent, Zeb throws the trial and deliberately sets up Seth Beamon, Deborah´s defense attorney, for a directed verdict. Zeb, bothered by his breach of ethics, keeps on pushing. He discovers that the first four murder victims were on the board of directors for the Riverside Hotel. He also discovers Christian McInnis´ Uno Nummata gambling company wants to buy the Riverside but the Riverside´s board has refused to sell. So it all adds up. Not having enough to secure an indictment from the grand jury; Zeb sets a trap for Mayor Rushing and Judge Baremore. The trap works. Judge Baremore is exposed and co_operates. There are two more deaths but justice is served.

Dawson, through his thoughtful and well-wrought study of Friedrich Schleiermacher, provides an insight into contemporary nationalistic movements and the people who have a part in them. Schleiermacher, a prominent theologian and educator, was also a leading contributor to the tide of nationalism which swept Germany during the Napoleonic era. Dawson does not present Schleiermacher as an archetype for nationalists, but rather as an example of one man who was willing to sacrifice everything for the good of the nation. Examining the influence of Pietism, rationalism, and romanticism on Schleiermacher, the author explains the origins of his subject's nationalistic activities and traces the evolution of his patriotic point of view. Dawson depicts the development of Schleiermacher's patriotism from Prussian particularism to German nationalism—an allegiance to an idealized Germany unified in religion, language, folkways. He describes the diverse approaches utilized by Schleiermacher to achieve a patriotic awakening among his countrymen: "...he preached nationalistic sermons; he delivered scholarly lectures; he repeatedly risked his life on dangerous missions which would help free Germany from France; he used his journalistic talents to try to stimulate the national consciousness of the German people; and he even served in the government of Prussia in an attempt to reconstruct the educational system so that nationalism might be advanced.

The 1914 Battle of the Aisne, officially from 12 15 September, came about as a result of the German retirement from the Battle of the Marne, which took place further south as the huge conscript armies of France and Germany jostled for position almost within sight of Paris. By the time the British arrived on the Aisne the battle line stretched some 150 miles from Noyon in the west to Verdun in the east and it was only along a tiny fifteen mile sector in the middle that the The British Expeditionary Force was engaged. However, it fought bitter engagements, which took place in difficult conditions and casualties were heavy. The Aisne fighting was the final attempt by the allies to follow through from the success of the Marne.
