Educated Western Christians seek to understand the scientific basis of evolution as well as to justify why a God worth worshiping can be responsible -- yet not indictable -- for evil. The author creates an innovative theological framework that addresses these concerns and provides part of a structure for fundamental theology which is based on the neoclassical metaphysics of Charles Hartshorne and the speculative cosmology of Alfred North Whitehead. His model of the divine has three basic principles: God is love, God is the creator, and this creativity is an integral part of divine essence. From this model, he develops a fundamental theology which focuses on the nature of divinity, the interaction between human and the divine, and divine revelation. He attributes much of his own concept of revelation to Whitehead's model in which revelation is indicative of a successful communion between human and divine. This revelation is achieved through symbolic mediation and it is as much inter-personal reconciliation as it is a universal resonance of the creative essence between heaven and earth. This framework shows initial agreement with Christian traditions; it is highly coherent, universal in scope and, most importantly, it has rich potential for future Christian understanding.

50 Ways To Die is a compendium of death and sometimes violent crimes occurring in the county, and the social trends that surround them. West’s research centered on records of Coroner’s Inquest and microfilm of the newspaper, Yorkville Enquirer, both of which are archived at the History Center in York. The inquests records had not been studied until West began his research which coincided with members of the staff and volunteers were indexing. A great deal of appreciation is extended to Archivist Nancy Sanbet, her staff and the several volunteers who assisted. And a special thank you to Miles Gardner who gave the idea for this book by his Murder and Mayhem in Old Kershaw. This book gives accounts of murders, suicides, accidental deaths and gruesome infanticides, ending in 1929. West has randomly extracted more than twenty murders, some of which are still retold in local kitchens and living rooms. The list includes the 1929 chilling murder of Faye Wilson King by her husband, Rafe. This murder brought national publicity to the small western York County town of Sharon. Also included is the 1922 murder of playing children by a man angry over water in Clover, and the brutal murder of Johnny Lee Good in 1888. People of York County have murdered over women, food, liquor, money, slander and unpaid bills and they did it with planks, bare hands, guns, knives and even ironing boards. Sometimes these occurred on the spur of the moment with overheated blood and sometimes with cold calculation. While most crimes were white on white or black on black, the subject of race has been excluded expect in cases where mentioning it was for clarification. One thing is clear in many of these cases, justice came to some, and the times were certainly not safe for minorities, the poor, and children.

The remarkable twists and turns in the story helps readers to better understand the psychology of both the good and evil side of humanity. It also illustrates the imperative to forgive even the worst of sins. The story leads into a father’s worst fear, the loss of his entire family. It presents many of the same issues covered in the young unmarried woman’s story, only from the male perspective. One focus in both accounts is the fact that all of us experience gross injustice in our lives. Successfully dealing with the trauma it causes, even though difficult, includes working to accept the injustice, learning from it, and focusing on moving forward in one’s life. The journey through the stories of two primary characters exposes the reader to the successes and failures of our fallible criminal justice system. It also introduces us in some detail to the minds of those persons who commit very evil acts. A second focus is to understand what motivates them to commit crimes, and how the factors that drive some persons to commit evil can be ameliorated. Both lead characters also deal front and center with the problem of racism by helping the reader to step into the lives of non-whites, several of whom are central figures in the lives of both stories’ two leading characters.

Jerry was recruited by Gonzaga University during the summer of 1951. His thirty-year run as a basketball player, coach, and diversified educator in Washington State began in September of that year. The new coach, Hank Anderson, led the team on a long march to becoming the great nationally recognized basketball program that exists at Gonzaga University today. Jerry's memoirs show his enormous appreciation for Gonzaga University and his pride in being a part of that beginning greatness. Jerry started as a freshman on the first Anderson team. During four years of competition, he amassed an incredible 1,670 rebounds. Sixty years later, that record still stands! Unbelievably, the next-closest player is 760 behind. This is a record that might never be broken! He is still in the top ten in scoring and a member of the over-forty-point club. At one time, he held all the scoring records. His standing jump was 11'1''. For those who don't know, that's 13 inches above the rim. At 6'4'', he jumped center for Gonzaga in over one hundred games and controlled 90 percent of them! The many great players who came later, including John Stockton and Frank Burgess, chipped away at his early records. Describing the why, when, where, and how of his life's chronicle fulfills a family need. Additionally, the players, students, and professionals Jerry met along his journey will be pleased to know more about his voyage. During an evening visit to his son-in-law's home, Jerry discovered an inspirational force that set in motion an autobiographical explication dedicated to his family. Todd Harrison, Jerry's son-in-law, showed him a brief composition written by Todd's grandfather that described his life and the settling of a Mormon family in early Utah. The manuscript is cherished by Todd and his family because it recounts the hardships, experiences, and successes of their ancestor. It became obvious to Jerry that such a composition would be an ideal way to share parts of his boyhood and professional life more intimately with family. For whatever reasons, Jerry felt that he had not been able to fully share his life experiences with his family. He has stated, "I just didn't talk much to the kids about other experiences in my life while they were growing up." The Reconstruction was meant to be a time of rebuilding and healing for the South following the Civil War. But the Reconstruction, marked by the continued strong hatred and hostility between liberated African Americans and angry Ku Klux Klan members, was hardly a time of reconciliation for the South. This work deals with the Reconstruction-era Ku Klux Klan, a paramilitary group with political aims that used violence and intimidation to achieve its goals. It addresses exclusively the Klans activities in York County, South Carolina, during the years 1865-1877. It clarifies some misconceptions about the Reconstruction Klan and disentangles it from later organizations that used the same name. There are no reports of its burning crosses or persecuting Jews and Catholics and it has no connection to the Klan that appeared in the early part of the twentieth century or todays counterpart that marches under the Confederate flag. Throughout the Reconstruction, blacks and whites tried to out-shout each other in the new era of conversation, and, as shown in this work, made little progress in understanding, or trying to understand, each other.
