Hidden off the coast of Chincoteague and Assateague lands of Virginia lies a secret archipelago, the biggest island being the human inhabited but wild Aplainis Island. Named by the Native Americans, the island is a world so isolated and well preserved that they create their own weather and host animals from all over the world, and many were only found there. Aplainis horses patrol the island Laplaycunes and stalk the plain for which it is named for them. When twelve-year-old Maly Paysley and her mother go into the Payoe forest for a zoological study, the girl befriends a unique grey foal with striking characteristics even for his athletic breed and finds herself at the mercy of the elements, chaos, and man!
