Land Management is normally embedded in a complex legal context, which frequently consists of contradictory objectives, such as: strengthening of rural areas, satisfying the need for affordable living and commercial space, protecting environment and health, supporting transport infrastructure development, and preserving the landscape. Land management can be understood as a process that comprises coordination of such activities while managing the use and the development of land resources. It can be counstrained by the land use specifications resulting from spatial planning process. Along with this, the legal framework often contains generally formulated concepts and open standards, which provide a range of opportunities for realization while balancing the different interests. In this process it is important if and how both constraints and opportunities are recognised by the actors. Social policy does not only seek to provide services and redistribute income, but also regulates and influences the labour market (see Purdy, 1997:270). The concept and understanding of social policy has changed significantly over time. Although the historical development is beyond the scope of this essay, it should be noted that before the 1980s, economic objectives clearly dominated social dimensions, whereas today a more balanced approach is taken to economics and social aspects (see Hantrais, 2000:221). Here, emphasis will be given to the current situation; nevertheless, the discussion should be perceived in the context of social policy evolution. Furthermore, social policy-making is closely linked to structural changes within the European labour market (see Mercado et al., 2001:204) and is, therefore, an on-going process rather than a static picture. The first section of this essay will give a short explanation of the statement in discussion. Afterwards, the necessity of European social policy and its benefits to business shall be examined. In the following, potential drawbacks and obstacles to competitiveness will be highlighted. The final part summarises the line of argument and provides a future outlook on the subject.

How is “rhythm” experienced? What role does “rhythm” play in musicians’ search for a collective musical identity? These questions are answered in this book on the fascinating blend of musical styles and influences within contemporary Malagasy music. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, “the footprint between Africa and Asia,” with a history marked by many waves of migration. Over the centuries, a wide range of styles of music, of instruments and of dance have become a part of the island’s musical palette. Despite this and the resulting diversity of regional musical particularities, musicians claim there is one element they all share: a common rhythmical base. To explore this claim and the meaning of “rhythm” in the Malagasy context, Jenny Fuhr makes use of her dual role as musician and researcher. Self-reflexive field research combined with learning to play and perform Malagasy music enables a profound intercultural dialogue. This book shows how her intense involvement in music-making and a constant dialogue between musical experiences and discourses opens up new paths of understanding. In doing so, it challenges prevalent Western analytical perspectives on music and demonstrates the need for a more performance-based approach to ethnomusicology.

A great nursing reformer, Ethel Gordon Fenwick was born before the age of the motor car and died at the start of the jet age. When she began her career, nursing was a vocation, unregulated with a dangerous variety of standards and inefficiencies. A gifted nurse, Ethel worked alongside great medical men of the day and, aged 24, she became the youngest matron of St Bartholomew’s hospital London, where she instigated many improvements. At that time, anyone could be called a nurse, regardless of ability. Ethel recognized that for the safety of patients, and of nurses, there must be an accepted standard of training, with proof of qualification provided by a professional register. Often contentious, Ethel was a determined woman. She fought for nearly thirty years to achieve a register to ensure nurses were qualified, respected professionals. A suffragist and journalist, she travelled to America where she met like-minded nursing colleagues. As well as helping to create the International Council of Nurses, and the Royal British Nurses Association, she was also instrumental in organising nurses and supplies during the Graeco-Turkish War, and was awarded several medals for this work. Thanks to her long campaign for registration, a year after her death nurses were ready to take their place alongside other professionals when the National Health Service began in 1948.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Cambridge (Ashcroft International Business School - Marketing Department), language: English, abstract: Cause-related marketing (CRM) has become a widely discussed topic as well as an increasingly important marketing technique. In this paper, the subject is analysed not from the usual perspective of companies, but from the charities’ point of view, focusing on the example of British cancer charities. The study shows that cause-related marketing has developed in context of a changing business environment and growing customer demand. Its relevance is highlighted with regard to consumer behaviour theories, introducing CRM as an innovative and promising marketing tool. From the fierce competition in today’s market-place for charities and the changing attitude of donors, emerges the need for new charity marketing techniques. CRM is already widely used in the marketing of cancer-related organisations, as show various examples outlined in the text. However, the potential is not yet fully exploited and some substantial problems remain, especially in terms of company cooperation and missing empirical data. As a result of the investigation, cancer charities are recommended to extend their CRM activities, to prepare for the arising tasks internally and to communicate their programmes openly to the public. Additionally, extensive future research is suggested to gain more knowledge about the effects of cause-related marketing. This study comprises comprehensive material from secondary sources, such as books, articles and reports, along with extensive Internet research. Complementary, an in-depth interview provides insight into the work of Cancer Research UK. The findings of this paper are of special interest for charities and companies alike, as well as for marketing students and lecturers.
