Suicides, excessive overtime, and hostility and violence on the factory floor in China. Drawing on vivid testimonies from rural migrant workers, student interns, managers and trade union staff, Dying for an iPhone is a devastating expose of two of the world’s most powerful companies: Foxconn and Apple. As the leading manufacturer of iPhones, iPads, and Kindles, and employing one million workers in China alone, Taiwanese-invested Foxconn’s drive to dominate global electronics manufacturing has aligned perfectly with China’s goal of becoming the world leader in technology. This book reveals the human cost of that ambition and what our demands for the newest and best technology means for workers. Foxconn workers have repeatedly demonstrated their power to strike at key nodes of transnational production, challenge management and the Chinese state, and confront global tech behemoths. Dying for an iPhone allows us to assess the impact of global capitalism’s deepening crisis on workers.’
The experiences we enjoy, endure, or miss out on are influenced by what our surroundings allow and invite us to do. Just like our food diet, our experience diet influences our health and so our chances of finding happiness and fulfilling our potential. A healthy experience diet offers inspiration, reassurance, delight, and play. It nurtures physical, cognitive, and emotional health, builds resilience, and fosters confidence and self-esteem. An unhealthy experience diet lacks these things and consigns people to lives diminished in quantity and quality. Recipes for Urban Happiness offers an innovative way of looking at the relationship between people and place and redefines what good urban design is. The book outlines what designers and non-designers can do to create urban places where nurturing behaviours are both possible and preferable. Recipes for Urban Happiness will be relevant to public health, community development, and design practitioners, as well as students and academics.

Your marriage is fine, right? Sure, there are showdowns over who unloads more dishes, and some simmering discontent over who drives more car pools, cleans more dust bunnies, and keeps the social wheels of your existence greased. The sex is good, though you can’t remember when you last had it. Come to think of it, you’re plagued by a nagging sense that marriage used to be so much more fun. Marriage can be a mysterious, often irrational business. But the key, propose Paula Szuchman and Jenny Anderson in this incomparable and engaging book, is to think like an economist. Smart, funny, deeply researched, and refreshingly realistic, It’s Not You, It’s the Dishes cuts through the noise of emotions, egos, and tired relationship clichés to solve the age-old riddle of a happy, healthy marriage. Book 2: Many people want more money. It’s a given. It’s simple. But what they don’t understand, is that some qualities need to be developed in order to receive more from the universe. What you need to do, is to manage your time, your cortisol levels, and your emotional intelligence in a way that you can stay calm while doing “your thing.” Book 3: You may be familiar with the law of attraction, but I bet there are still some principles that you don’t fully comprehend, simply because you have never heard about them. You will get some steps and keys to develop more of it to your advantage. Book 4: How can you attract more money? How can you become a literal magnet of wealth and passively enjoy the wealth you have accumulated? Well, it’s not always but for most of us, It’s possible. Instead of going into specifics of various businesses, this book deals with the basic mindset you need to attract wealth and think on a higher level. This groundbreaking book is a frank and critical observation of a hugely politically sensitive topic. Jenny Cargill, drawing on her experience of BEE over its 15-year history, presents an uncompromising and essential review of the policy, its results and the lessons that can be learnt. By drawing on case studies, Cargill challenges common perceptions of BEE and provides disquieting new evidence of policy doing the opposite of what it was designed to achieve. Trick or Treat is the first book to provide such a comprehensive, yet accessible, analysis of BEE ownership.

Designing the Compassionate City outlines an approach to urban design that is centred on an explicit recognition of the inherent dignity of all people. It suggests that whether we thrive or decline—as individuals or as a community—is dependent on our ability to fulfil the full spectrum of our needs. This book considers how our surroundings help or hinder us from meeting these needs by influencing both what we can do and what we want to do; either inspiring us to lead healthy, fulfilled lives or consigning us to diminished lives tainted by ill health and unfulfilled potential. Designing the Compassionate City looks at how those who participate in designing towns and cities can collaborate with those who live in them to create places that help people to accumulate the life lessons, experiences and achievements, as well as forge the connections to meet their needs, to thrive and to fulfil their potential. The book explores a number of inspiring case studies that have sought to meet this challenge and examines what has worked and what hasn’t. From this, some conclusions are drawn about how we can all participate in creating places that leave a lasting legacy of empowerment and commitment to nurturing one another. It is essential reading for students and practitioners designing happier, healthier places.
Imagine. What if our physical workspaces-the specific arrangements of walls and halls, sizes and shapes of rooms-were actually making us smarter or duller, enabling or disabling our individual and collective ability to think? What if a more astute crafting of professional habitats led to a greater ease in dealing with current tasks and a more adept foreshadowing of future ones? What if clever digs allowed us to learn more readily, learn from others, and help others learn? They can. This is the grand story I tell.
The Companion on Humanitarian Action addresses the political, ethical, legal and practical issues which influence reactions to humanitarian crisis. It does so by exploring the daily dilemmas faced by a range of actors, including policy makers, aid workers, the private sector and the beneficiaries of aid and by challenging common perceptions regarding humanitarian crisis and the policies put in place to address these. Through such explorations, it provides practitioners and scholars with the knowledge needed to both understand and improve upon current forms of humanitarian action. The Companion will be of use to those interested a range of humanitarian programmes ranging from emergency medical assistance, military interventions, managing refugee flows and the implementation of international humanitarian law. As opposed to addressing specific programmes, it will explore five themes seen as relevant to understanding and engaging in all modes of humanitarian action. The first section explores varying interpretations of humanitarianism, including critical historical and political-economic explanations as well as more practice based explorations focused on notions needs assessments and evaluation. Following this, readers will be exposed to the latest debates on a range of humanitarian principles including neutrality and sovereignty, before exploring the key issues faced by the main actors involved in humanitarian crisis (from international NGOs to local community based organizations). The final two sections address what are seen as key dilemmas in regards to humanitarian action and emerging trends in the humanitarian system, including the increasing role of social media in responding to crises. Whilst not a ‘how to guide’, the Companion contains many practical insights for policy makers and aid workers, whilst also offering analytical insights for students of humanitarian action. Indeed, throughout the book, readers will come to the realization that understanding and improving humanitarian action simultaneously requires both active critical reflection and an acceptance of the urgency and timeliness of action that is required for humanitarian assistance to have an impact on vital human needs. Exploring a sector that is far from homogenous, both practitioners and scholars alike will find the contributions of this book offers them a deeper understanding of the motivations and mechanics of current interventions, but also insight into current changes and progress occurring in the field of humanitarian practice.
