North Carolina's capital city of Raleigh, nestled in the heart of the state, is a picturesque oak-canopied community founded in 1792. One of the few planned state capitals within the United States, the city has experienced tremendous growth since its creation, expanding from a small but busy 18th-century town to the modern-day anchor for one of America's largest technological centers. Historic Raleigh traces the city's transformation from its earliest days as a seat of state government to one of the South's premier Southern cities. Incorporating more than 200 vintage photographs, this volume features state government buildings such as the State Capitol and the Executive Mansion; six institutions of higher learning, including NC State, Meredith College, and Shaw University; the changing face of downtown and Fayetteville Street, which once was the heart of Raleigh's commercial district; the suburban explosion that began with Cameron Village, the first shopping center in the Southeast; the evolution of Raleigh's multi-cultural neighborhoods; and celebrations hosted by the city, including the state fair. The images, coupled with informative text, also delve into the ways in which national events, such as world wars and the Civil Rights Movement, affected Raleigh on the local level.

But the sheriff shows little interest—and Everly Baker is desperate for his help in solving her brother’s mysterious death. The connections between cases tantalize Wyatt, as does the victim’s sister. And when a criminal puts Everly in his crosshairs, Wyatt must trust his crime-solving instincts to protect her—and catch a killer . . .
Focusing on the intersection of Christianity and politics in the American penitentiary system, Jennifer Graber explores evangelical Protestants' efforts to make religion central to emerging practices and philosophies of prison discipline from the 1790s through the 1850s. Initially, state and prison officials welcomed Protestant reformers' and ministers' recommendations, particularly their ideas about inmate suffering and redemption. Over time, however, officials proved less receptive to the reformers' activities, and inmates also opposed them. Ensuing debates between reformers, officials, and inmates revealed deep disagreements over religion's place in prisons and in the wider public sphere as the separation of church and state took hold and the nation's religious environment became more diverse and competitive. Examining the innovative New York prison system, Graber shows how Protestant reformers failed to realize their dreams of large-scale inmate conversion or of prisons that reflected their values. To keep a foothold in prisons, reformers were forced to relinquish their Protestant terminology and practices and instead to adopt secular ideas about American morals, virtues, and citizenship. Graber argues that, by revising their original understanding of prisoner suffering and redemption, reformers learned to see inmates' afflictions not as a necessary prelude to a sinner's experience of grace but as the required punishment for breaking the new nation's laws.

The West is one of the strongest and most enduring place images in the world and its myth is firmly rooted in popular culture – whether novels, film, television, music, clothing and even video games. The West combines myth and history, rugged natural scenery and wide open spaces, popular culture and promises of transformation. These imagined places draw in tourists, attracted by a cultural heritage that is part fictional and mediatised. In turn, tourism operators and destination marketing organisations refashion what they present to fit these imagined images. This book explores this imagining of a mythic West through three key themes, travel, film and frontiers to offer new insight into how the imagination of the West and popular culture has influenced the construction of tourism. In doing so, it examines the series of paradoxes that underlie the basic appeal of the West: evocative frontier, a boundary zone between civilisation and wilderness and between order and lawlessness. It draws on a range of films and literature as well as varying places from festivals to national parks to showcase different aspects of the nexus between travel, film and frontiers in this fascinating region. Interdisciplinary in character, it includes perspectives from cultural studies, American studies, tourism and film studies. Written by leading academics, this title will be valuable reading for students, researchers and academics in the fields of cultural studies, tourism, film studies and media studies and all those interested in film tourism.

But then she meets Amin's sister, who shows her that there is no shame in being a girl and a strong athlete.

This new collection reflects a resurgence of interest in Shakespeare's plays performed between 1608 and 1613: Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale, The Tempest, All is True (Henry VIII), The Two Noble Kinsmen, and Cardenio. It offers a broad range of new, historicist approaches, touching upon key topics in current Shakespearean studies, such as kinship relations, manliness, magic, medico-politics, nationalism, rhetoric, schism, sexuality and staging conventions. The plays are explored both individually and within generic, thematic and chronological groups. Each author combines new research with their experience of teaching the plays, offering innovative approaches to some well-known works, as well as encouraging readers to explore less familiar dramas such as Pericles, Cymbeline, All is True and The Two Noble Kinsmen. The volume is unusual in its coverage of the lost 'late' play Cardenio, and considers its significance for our conception of the 'lateness' of these plays. This book will fill a large gap in the market for a broad-ranging critical introduction to this important and increasingly popular area in Shakespeare's work, and is suitable as a textbook for undergraduate, graduate and more general readers.
