Lucia Giroux lived in The Nation: a utopian society where all citizens were committed to "doing their fair share" for the greater good. She led the perfect teenage life in her safe haven of Province 3, but that all quickly changed when she learned that not everything was as it seemed. After being sent on a mission and finding out that The Nation hid dark secrets from its citizens, Lucia joined her parents as part of the Dissentient—an uprising against The Nation. Just when she is beginning to understand who her parents truly are she narrowly lost them at the hands of The Nation. Together they headed west to join other Dissidents at The Dissentient Camp. When Lucia arrives at the Camp she has high expectations, but they are quickly shattered as she realizes that just as in The Nation not everything—or everybody—is as it seems. She discovers that The Dissentient has their own set of secrets and their own agenda. When her boyfriend, the steadfast Nicolas Pernelli, is assigned to go on a mission back in the Provinces, Lucia finds companionship with the charismatic Dissident Luke Simons. Together Lucia and Luke delve into the mysteries of The Dissentient where Lucia finds clues to her past. Will Lucia finally accept that she is the Light of The Prophecy before it’s too late?
150 years after the end of the Civil War, the United States falls into another Civil War. The Second Great War leaves the US population and landscape decimated and out of many, comes one: The Nation. Four generations has passed and life in The Nation is perfect. The Provinces are picturesque, there is no crime, and at seventeen years old everyone chooses a Vocation in order to contribute their fair share to society. Lucia Giroux's Vocation Ceremony is fast approaching and her life seems to be headed in the right direction. Her childhood best friend, Jack Delante, has expressed interest in making her his girlfriend and she is getting ready to announce her Vocation as Record Keeper, following in her father's footsteps, working in The Vaults surrounded by her favorite authors and poets. But when Lucia starts working at The Vaults it isn't quite what she expected. First, there's the incredibly good-looking and intelligent Nicolas Pernelli, her father's assistant in the Historical Department who he's never mentioned. Next, she finds out that her father has been working on a secret research project. Lastly, Lucia meets Pearl Radita, her immediate supervisor in the Literature Department and things really begin to get weird. Pearl assigns Lucia to be part of a team working to decipher a poem called The Light, which seems to predict a Third Great War. Just as their analysis gets under way Lucia receives a message that changes everything. When Lucia's mother suddenly falls ill, and she tells her father of the message, he sends her and Nic on a dangerous journey to the Farmlands to find out more information. Lucia's idyllic world is turned upside down as she learns not only The Nation, but her parents have been keeping secrets. Lucia wants answers. How far is she willing to go to get them?

An accessible new title focused on the science of healthcare delivery, from the acclaimed Understanding series A Doody’s Core Title for 2024! “... a landmark text that will shape the field and inform our dialog for years to come—-and it should be part of the required curriculum at medical and nursing schools around the world. Excellence in healthcare delivery science should become a core competency of the modern physician. Howell and Stevens have given medicine an important gift that may enable just that.” —Sachin H. Jain, MD, MBA, FACP; President and CEO, CareMore and Aspire Health; Co-Founder and Co-Editor-in-Chief, Healthcare: The Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation “You hold in your hands 35 years of investigation and learning, condensed into understandable principles and applications. It is a guidebook for effective care delivery leadership, practice, and success.” —Brent C. James, MD, MStat, Clinical Professor, Stanford University School of Medicine “...a must-read for anyone who, like me, is frustrated with the pace of our progress and is committed to creating a learning health system for all.” —Lisa Simpson, MB, BCh, MPH, FAAP, President and CEO, AcademyHealth “... will quickly become the go-to, must-read resource for practitioners looking to have an impact as innovators in healthcare delivery.” —David H. Roberts, MD, Steven P. Simcox, Patrick A. Clifford, and James H. Higby Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School Today’s healthcare system is profoundly complicated, but we persist in trying to roll out breakthroughs as if the healthcare system were still just the straightforward “physician’s workshop” of the early 20th century. Only rarely do we employ research-quality analytics to assess how well our care delivery innovations really work in the practice. And shockingly, the US healthcare delivery system spends only 0.1% of revenue on R&D in how we actually deliver care. Small wonder that we find ourselves faced with the current medical paradox: Treatments that seemed miraculous at the beginning of our lifetimes are routine today, but low-quality care and medical errors harm millions of people worldwide even as spiraling healthcare costs bankrupt an unacceptable number of American families every year. Healthcare delivery science bridges this gap between scientific research and complex, real-world healthcare delivery and operations. With its engaging, clinically relevant style, Understanding Healthcare Delivery Science is the perfect introduction to this emerging field. This reader-friendly text pairs a thorough discussion of commonly available healthcare improvement tools and top-tier research methods with numerous case studies that put the content into a clinically relevant framework, making this text a valuable tool for administrators, researchers, and clinicians alike.
