Uncovers the class and race dimensions of the "cupcake wars" In the wake of school-lunch reform debates, heated classroom cupcake wars, and concerns over childhood obesity, the diet of American children has become a “crisis” and the cause of much anxiety among parents. Many food-conscious parents are well educated, progressive and white, and while they may explicitly value race and class diversity, they also worry about less educated or less well-off parents offering their children food that is unhealthy. Jennifer Patico embedded herself in an urban Atlanta charter school community, spending time at school events, after-school meetings, school lunchrooms, and private homes. Drawing on interviews and ethnographic observation, she details the dilemma for parents stuck between a commitment to social inclusion and a desire for control of their children’s eating. Ultimately, Patico argues that the attitudes of middle-class parents toward food reflect an underlying neoliberal capitalist ethic, in which their need to cultivate proper food consumption for their children can actually work to reinforce class privilege and exclusion. Listening closely to adults' and children's food concerns, The Trouble with Snack Time explores those unintended effects and suggests how the "crisis" of children’s food might be reimagined toward different ends.

By reading Kant's theoretical work in light of his connection to the life sciences?especially his reflections on the epigenetic theory of formation and genesis?Jennifer Mensch provides a new understanding of much that has been otherwise obscure or misunderstood in it. ?Epigenesis”?a term increasingly used in the late eighteenth century to describe an organic, nonmechanical view of nature's generative capacities?attracted Kant as a model for understanding the origin of reason itself. Mensch shows how this model allowed Kant to conceive of cognition as a self-generated event and thus to approach the history of human reason as if it were an organic species with a natural history of its own. She uncovers Kant's commitment to the model offered by epigenesis in his first major theoretical work, the Critique of Pure Reason, and demonstrates how it informed his concept of the organic, generative role given to the faculty of reason within his system as a whole. With 66% of reproductive-age women overweight or obese, the need to combat unhealthy and uninformed eating is a responsibility we all share. But “eating for you” also means being practical. Because I know you’re more than just a mom-to-be. You’re a mom-to-be who’s got a thousand other jobs, from career woman to budding chef to amateur yogi to professional Pinstagrammer and possibly, maybe, if you have 5 minutes left, wife (and perhaps you’re a mom already, in which case, you know what I mean). No matter how you spend your time, chances are you don’t have much of it—and certainly don’t want to spend the next nine months measuring the folate counts in every box of cereal, or starving on your next road trip because Burger King doesn’t serve kale. You need nutrition. And you need it now. And although cooking your own food is the surest way to maintain a healthy diet, you probably can’t do so every day for the next nine months. That’s why I wrote Eat This, Not That! When You’re Expecting, the only book of its kind by a doctor qualified to talk about nutrition, physiology, and disease—who will also tell you what to do the next time you’re at the salad bar, in the yogurt aisle, or at Mickey D’s. Because, let’s be honest, momma’s gonna crave a little Mickey D’s. And she’s going to need clean energy, too. Early Christians used charges of adultery, incest, and lascivious behavior to demonize their opponents, police insiders, resist pagan rulers, and define what it meant to be a Christian. Christians frequently claimed that they, and they alone were sexually virtuous, comparing themselves to those marked as outsiders, especially non-believers and "heretics," who were said to be controlled by lust and unable to rein in their carnal desires. True or not, these charges allowed Christians to present themselves as different from and morally superior to those around them. Through careful, innovative readings, Jennifer Knust explores the writings of Paul, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyons, and other early Christian authors who argued that Christ alone made self-mastery possible. Rejection of Christ led to both immoral sexual behavior and, ultimately, alienation and punishment from God. Knust considers how Christian writers participated in a long tradition of rhetorical invective, a rhetoric that was often employed to defend status and difference. Christians borrowed, deployed, and reconfigured classical rhetorical techniques, turning them against their rulers to undercut their moral and political authority. Knust also examines the use of accusations of licentiousness in conflicts between rival groups of Christians. Portraying rival sects as depraved allowed accusers to claim their own group as representative of "true Christianity." Knust's book also reveals the ways in which sexual slurs and their use in early Christian writings reflected cultural and gendered assumptions about what constituted purity, morality, and truth. In doing so, Abandoned to Lust highlights the complex interrelationships between sex, gender, and sexuality within the classical, biblical, and early-Christian traditions.
