An attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-operative preparation on the level of post-operative stress experienced by patients is described. Two hypothesis were tested: 1. Pre-operative information about prospective treatment and care, and the teaching of exercises to be performed post-operatively, will minimise the rise in biochemical indicators of stress, 2. A relationship will be demonstrated between measurements of biochemical indicators of stress and other indicators of patient welfare. The results of the study show that the first hypothesis is accepted and that post-operative stress can be reduced. The second hypothesis can also be accepted although the measurement at the physical state was not sensitive enough to differentiate between the two groups.
