What is Christian adult learning? What questions are raised when Christian faith and learning meet? Many existing approaches primarily address issues such as curriculum content or teacher character. Building on the work of John Hull, Disruptive Inclusion approaches the intersection of theology and pedagogy suggesting that the christianness of Christian adult learning is best expressed by the posture adopted by learners, not only via what is taught and by whom. Specifically, Jen Smith claims that a key to Christian adult learning posture is how learners include the unexpected and disruptive in their learning. Drawing on key resources, such as the biblical narrative, Christian tradition, liturgy, community and her own experiences, Jen takes us on a deeply personal and practical journey into disruptive inclusion and invites us to re-imagine what effective Christian adult learning might look like in the classroom, pulpit and online learning settings.
When it comes to your life, do you let the urgent take precedence over the important? Do the days slip by with lots of activity, and yet the big thingsthose dreams youve carried for yearslie dormant, slipping further and further from reach? Are you ready to be honest with yourself? Are you ready to stake a claim and make a commitment? Are you ready to manifest your thoughts as concrete action in the world? Whatever it is that your heart desires, are you ready to get started, to close the gap between wishful thinking and deliberate action? Its not the lack of time thats stopping you, its the lack of purpose and structure. In ACT, the second book in the ALIGN-ACT-ACHIEVE series, author Jen Smith builds on the foundation laid in ALIGN to help you move into action. She joins purpose with structure to provide a road map for a fun, inspiring, and intentional journey toward the future you want.
For those who have enjoyed their fair share of success, life appears good. Yet at times, something seems to be missing, leaving us to wonder: Is there more? In the final installment of her ALIGN-ACT-ACHIEVE series, author Jen Smith explores this yearning for more and leads us beyond ourselves and into living in relationship and community. Smith includes anecdotes that disclose her personal journey, pause points for reflection, space for journaling, and a variety of reference materials that teach how to overcome fear, manage time, build authentic relationship, ask the right questions, practice gratitude, and progress toward self-transcendence. ACHIEVE shares guidance and practical tools for anyone ready to summon the power within and move beyond self to find authentic relationship, community, and purpose. How much are you willing to risk to be yourself?
In the complexity and speed of modern life, taking time to nurture oneself is often sacrificed to more immediate demands. We struggle to understand our purpose and how we show up in the world. We wonder what our lives are about and if we are making a difference. These are big questions with no easy answers, yet questions worth exploring. In ALIGN, author Jen Smith shows that the first step to creating a better life begins with understanding identity. In this first book of the ALIGN-ACT-ACHIEVE series, Smith explores the process of aligning which includes examining your values, beliefs, skills, and talentsthose things that make your spirit soar and your energy surge. Traveling inward, ALIGN guides you through a series of stories, questions, insights, and exercises to help you find your own answers to lifes most important, yet often ignored, questions. It marks the beginning of a journey of a lifetime.

Using simple exercises, rediscover the pleasure you got from childhood drawing, before you became too self-conscious and self-critical to enjoy it. As we grow up, somehow we learn that drawing is hard and there are all sorts of rules about colour and perspective that stifle our creativity. This book is here to remind you of the joy you once found in creating, scribbling, getting something down on paper—and that it’s more about the process than the result. This accessible guide takes you by the hand, breaks down the barriers to sketching, and shows you how to build your confidence and skills to draw spontaneously, with nothing more than the things around you for inspiration. Through a series of simple exercises, you will learn how to sketch everyday items, people and places, using simple watercolour techniques to add colour to your sketchbooks.

Body/State brings together original essays addressing various aspects of the evolving interaction between bodies and states. While each essay has different empirical and/or theoretical focus, authors consider a number of overlapping themes to appreciate the state's engagement with, and concern about, bodies. Divided into five parts, the first part, 'Bodies Modified and Divided' considers how the production, regulation, policing and maintenance of borders (physical, social, sexual, political, religious, etc.) are used to enable or constrain the physical (re)shaping of the body. Part two, 'Capital Bodies', extends the state's concern with the flows of bodies that make up the nation to consider how they are enrolled in the complex structures of capitalist exchange that form the basis for maintaining and contesting a set of relationships between states and markets. Part three, 'Deviance and Resistance', examines both how states seek to discipline ’non-normal’ bodies and appreciates the capacity of changes in the socio-cultural meaning and nature of bodies to resist and/or escape states. Part four, ’Sovereignty and Surveillance’, develops themes of deviancy and resistance by considering the impact of new technologies both on the intimate regulatory reach of states into and across bodies and on the nature of embodiment itself. Finally, Part five, ’The Body Virtual’, examines the impact of new technologies and online spaces both on the intimate regulatory reach of states into and across bodies and on the nature of embodiment itself. A varied collection of essays that address important and complex topics in a readable and creative way.

This honest, clearly written, and accessible book shows how to use Family Dialogue Journals (FDJs) to increase and deepen learning across grade levels. Written by K–12 teachers who have been implementing and studying the use of weekly journals for several years, it shares what they have learned and why they have found FDJs to be an invaluable tool for forming effective partnerships with families. Learn from first-hand accounts how students write weekly about one big idea they have studied, ask a family member a related question, and then solicit their writing in the journal. Through these journal entries, they share their family knowledge with classmates while actively engaging with the curriculum. In turn, teachers extend the academic discussion by writing to each family and incorporating their funds of knowledge into classroom lessons—writing about everything from the use of thermometers to life in Michoacán, Mexico. Family participation in the FDJs is remarkably high across ages, ethnicities, and economic realities. “This is an incredibly readable book that is highly useful for teachers, teacher educators, and university researchers interested in this powerful practice. The descriptions of the classrooms are riveting and exemplify the kind of teaching we would all like to see in every classroom.” —Kathy Schultz, dean and professor, Mills College “Family Dialogue Journals is a beautiful, socially conscious book offering so much wisdom for curriculum, classroom norms, and creating learning-focused contexts. Readers will be immersed in classroom contexts, teachers’ decisionmaking processes, and practical advice about how to foster a humble, genuine, ongoing dialogue built upon mutual respect and openness with their students and students’ families. Family Dialogue Journals doesn’t just demonstrate the power of interpersonal relationships, it links those dialogues and relationships directly to curriculum and supporting students’ critical literacies of both community and academic ways of knowing and being Family Dialogue Journals is a beautiful, socially conscious book offering so much wisdom for curriculum, classroom norms, and creating learning-focused contexts.” —Stephanie Jones, professor, University of Georgia

Heather Donovan has no time for her own romance-she's busy making wedding dreams come true for other people and trying to reel her lonely and lovesick widowed mom Gloria back from beyond the brink of good taste. Her receptionist, Raul, is as interested in his hair style as he is in the clients. Indigo, the wedding photographer, never goes anywhere without his beret-or his attitude. Or love. Or maybe both? Along the way discover how duck-hunter ice sculptures end up as rehearsal dinner decor at an upscale hotel, why the young doctor has a broken heart, and whose will prevails when the photographer challenges a young couple's vision of the perfect wedding. Does love conquer all? We shall see!
Women today feel a constant pressure to improve themselves and just never feel like they're "enough." All too often, they live their daily lives disheartened, disillusioned, and disappointed. That's because joy doesn't come from a new self-improvement strategy; it comes from rooting their identity in who God says they are and what he has done on their behalf. This book calls women to look away from themselves in order to find the abundant life God offers them—contrasting the cultural emphasis on personal improvement and empowerment with what the Scriptures say about a life rooted, built up, and established in the gospel.
