While many people think true crime is a new phenomenon, Americans have been obsessed with the genre for over a century, and popular culture continuously tries to cash in. The names of infamous serial killers are well-known, but the identities of their often-female victims are frequently lost to history. This text flips the script and focuses on the women to keep their identities known and remembered. This is the first book to examine how popular culture has mistreated women as both perpetrators and victims of crime, covering a hundred-year span from 1920 to 2020. Detailed is popular culture's interest in true crime and how women in true crime documentation have largely been sexualized and victim-blamed over the decades.

This introduction to media literacy from a Christian perspective provides the tools to find and assess the beneficial—or harmful—ideologies depicted in notable films, programs, and trends. Television and movies shape popular culture, with audiences often unaware of how media messages influence the way they think, act, and view the world. In this enlightening guide, author Jen Letherer interprets film and television shows from a Christian standpoint, revealing how beliefs and values portrayed on the big and small screens often impact the moral conduct of daily viewers. This book provides the tools for Christians to discern the implicit and explicit messages found within this medium, and shows how motion pictures can improve or erode religious principles and a spiritual way of life. In a conversational tone, the work combines classic film theory, an assessment of story structure, and faith-based film criticism to delve into meaning and interpretations of popular movies and shows. Highlighted television programs include Top Chef, Modern Family, Downton Abbey, and The Walking Dead. The book also features films like Citizen Kane, Thelma and Louise, Star Wars, Inception, and The Hunger Games. This fascinating critique prompts media consumers to analyze the messages that their favorite broadcast programs send, consider if those messages are in line with their own values, and align their viewing choices with their personal beliefs.

Performance improvement is important for any organization in Europe. In the early 1990's the Productivity Measurement and Enhancement System (ProMES) was introduced in Europe. ProMES can help to define performance indicators for work groups. Feedback and goal setting are the crucial elements that operate in the use of this system in practice. In this issue we have brought together the experiences of European researchers in implementing the ProMES system. The first three articles cover these experiences and try to give an answer to three fundamental questions: -- In what way can people contribute to the effectiveness of the organization?-- What kind of motives do people have to contribute to organizational effectiveness?-- How can people actually improve performance? The last two articles focus on the subject of improving quality in particular. The fourth article illustrates that a gap exists between quality management practices and a more scientific approach. The model that is used by the European Foundation for Quality Management requires a better methodological and conceptual underpinning. The fifth article presents the results from a European Study about the social impact of the implementation of a quality policy in organizations. It shows that a quality policy can have impact on commitment, job security and upward communication.
Musicians who find fame on reality TV are supposed to provide a bit of entertainment and then fade away - not have three UK Top 10 albums and more than a dozen UK Top 10 singles. Maybe someone forget to tell Girls Aloud the rules.November 2002 saw the birth of the most successful reality TV-formed pop band in UK chart history - but little did the triumphant daughters of Popstars: The Rivals know what was in store. Cheryl Tweedy, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Sarah Harding, in their new guise as Girls Aloud, stormed to the coveted Christmas number one slot with 'Sound Of The Underground', consigning their rivals, One True Voice, to eternal oblivion.Stomping a stiletto-heeled shoe in the face of the pop landscape, Girls Aloud instantly changed what manufactured pop acts were about - with the talents of Brian Higgins' Xenomania behind their full frontal assault on the charts, Girls Aloud were unstoppable...and four-and-a-half-years, still were. The feisty fivesome proved right from the beginning that their unique and unabashed brand of punky girl-power pop would set the charts alight, and the Top 540 would never be the same again. But it hasn't always been straightforward for the girls. It was a hard slog to win over some sneering music critics, and when Cheryl was charged with assault after attacking a toilet attendant in a nightclub, some feared it would spell the end of the group's success. In true Girls Aloud style, however, the lovely ladies bounced back stronger than ever, hailed as the saviours of pop with a salvo of killer tunes and a bucketload of attitude. With the release of their greatest hits album in the autumn of 2006, rumours suggested the band were going to split up, but if anything they're better than ever. Now you can read the full story.

This book critically examines the development of the ‘stirring up hatred’ offences which are currently found within the UK’s Public Order Act 1986. Through a critical discourse analysis of key excerpts of parliamentary Hansard, the book constructs a detailed genealogy of the offences from the perspectives that shaped them. A novel application of theory on 'myth' is used to navigate the complex arguments and to trace ideas about identity and order across parliamentary debates, from fears of Fascism in the 1930s to condemnations of homophobia in the early 21st century. The story of the stirring up hatred offences told in this book therefore extends far beyond the traditional frame of a dilemma between regulating hate speech and safeguarding free speech: it is inextricably entwined with myths about law, race and national identity, and speaks to wider themes of coloniality, neoliberalism, white entitlement, British-Christian exceptionalism and the innocence of law. Written in an accessible and engaging style, this book challenges a wide range of assumptions about hate speech law and raises a series of considerations for developing forms of accountability that are less complicit in the harms that they are supposed to redress.
