This book is about Fred Bear and his magical and fantastical friends. Fred is a rather rotund and well-loved teddy bear with a torn ear, only one eye but very little fur. His friends include a ghost who would be afraid of his own shadow if he had one; a wizard who inhabits a scary castle, a group of fairy-folk, mischievous goblins, elves, gnomes and many others who reside in the Deep Dark Wood. Fred Bear lives in an old farmhouse not far from the village of Little Twitchett accompanied by his dog, Beau, and Gordon - he's the Ghost. Being a lazy bear, Fred drives to and from the village - and to anywhere further than the end of his property - in a car that can fly. The book contains several short stories and one long adventure as Fred searches for lost treasure.

Jemma Macera is a poet, author, and social activist living in Ithaca, New York. Her story reflects a first half of life with challenges that contributed to physical and emotional pain, and resulting symptoms of dementia in the second half of her life. Living in Ithaca provided her with ample alternative therapists and a supportive community that enabled her to find a healing path. Jemma attributes her high level of functionality to following the shaman's journey to wellness through singing, dancing, and storytelling, as well as to the generosity of many friends and healers. Her journey to wellness is the result of trusting the superior wisdom of the body and the unconscious mind over a disabled brain. Jemma lives with her life partner Walter, in her family home, and continues to enjoy square dancing, music, and singing with friends.

Drawing together the work of ten leading playwrights – a mixture of established and current writers – National Theatre Connections 2013 offers young performers between the ages of thirteen and nineteen everywhere an engaging selection of plays to perform, read or study. Each play is specifically commissioned by the National Theatre's literary department and reflects the past year's programming at the venue in the plays' ideas, themes and styles. The plays are performed by approximately 200 schools and youth theatre companies across the UK and Ireland, in partnership with multiple professional regional theatres where the works are showcased. The volume features an introduction by Anthony Banks, Associate Director for the National Theatre Discover Programme, and each play includes notes from the writer and director addressing the themes and ideas behind the play, as well as production notes and exercises. Published to coincide with the 2013 Connections festival, and the 50th anniversary of the National Theatre, this year's collection features work from Howard Brenton, Jim Cartwright, Lucinda Coxon, Ryan Craig, Stacey Gregg, Jonathan Harvey, Lenny Henry, Jemma Kennedy, Morna Pearson, and Anya Reiss.
The Antarctic continent carries the greatest diversity of lake environments on the planet: freshwater and saline lakes, tidal freshwater epishelf lakes, lakes on ice shelves and glacier surfaces, and over three hundred subglacial lakes; extraordinary ecosystems that have been separated from the atmosphere for up to millions of years. This book provides a unique and cutting edge synthesis of Antarctic limnology, drawing together current knowledge on geomorphology, morphometry, chemistry, community structure and function. It emphasises throughout the value of these near-pristine ecosystems as barometers of climate change, showing how responsive and vulnerable they are to the indirect impacts of anthropogenic activity. Antarctic Lakes begins with an introduction to their physical, chemical, and biological characteristics, providing a basis for understanding the subsequent detailed chapters on different lake types, and ends with a chapter considering the application of new technologies to polar limnology as well as identifying future research directions. This accessible text is suitable for both senior undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in Antarctic and polar limnology, and will also be of broad interest to researchers working in the areas of polar science, microbial ecology (and extremophiles), climatology, glaciology, and astrobiology.

Approaching the Stuart courts through the lens of the queen consort, Anna of Denmark, this study is underpinned by three key themes: translating cultures, female agency and the role of kinship networks and genealogical identity for early modern royal women. Illustrated with a fascinating array of objects and artworks, the book follows a trajectory that begins with Anna’s exterior spaces before moving to the interior furnishings of her palaces, the material adornment of the royal body, an examination of Anna’s visual persona and a discussion of Anna’s performance of extraordinary rituals that follow her life cycle. Underpinned by a wealth of new archival research, the book provides a richer understanding of the breadth of Anna’s interests and the meanings generated by her actions, associations and possessions.
