The Deepwater Horizon crude oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico was from the deepest oil well ever drilled. The crude oil spilling from this well was from a period in geological history coinciding with the greatest mass extinction of life the earth has ever seen. Some of this leaking crude oil is tied to bizarre deaths, at first in sea creatures, but soon, its impact escalated to threaten land animals, plants, and humans. When a massive fish kill occurs, it is initially blamed on chemicals used to disperse the crude oilbut a covert autopsy of a pet cat suggests something far more sinister is at play. Personal greed from certain high-profile private and government officials, plus the oil companys fear of financial ruin, results in attempts to cover up the real cause. Leaders then use hawkish foreign policies as tools for showing that they are tough enough to defend America's interests on the international stage. This link between leaders' policy positions and their personal images steers US foreign policy in directions that are more hawkish than what voters actually want. Combining polling data with survey experiments and original archival research on cases from the Vietnam War through the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, Friedman demonstrates that public opinion plays a surprisingly extensive—and often problematic—role in shaping US international behavior. With the commander-in-chief test, a perennial point of debate in national elections, Friedman's insights offer important lessons on how the politics of image-making impacts foreign policy and how the public should choose its president.

This study is an analysis of the competing initiative displayed between Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee during Grant’s 1864 Overland Campaign in Virginia. It begins with Lincoln’s appointing Grant as Lieutenant General and General in Chief of all Union armies on March 9, 1864, and concludes with the failure of Grant’s June 18 assault at Petersburg, Virginia. Grant and Lee’s campaign intentions are analyzed, their means are compared, and their armies’ actions are described and analyzed to determine that Lee displayed greater initiative than Grant. Lee demonstrated superior initiative during the campaign because he forced Grant to deviate from his plans and attack formidable defensive positions, and because he held the final initiative. Each of Grant’s flanking movements was an attempt to gain the initiative, followed by the destruction of Lee’s army. Each time Grant moved, Lee seized the initiative and barred Grant’s progress. Grant came closest to achieving his desired objective when he crossed the James River and attacked Petersburg. The attack failed because Grant’s senior commanders failed to sustain the Federal initiative.

Through Others' Eyes includes descriptions of traveling to and from Montgomery, but it focuses on the travelers' descriptions of Montgomery itself. The published accounts included in the book were written between 1825 and 1861 by Americans and Europeans with a variety of backgrounds. A few are as objective as can reasonably be expected considering the short durations of the writers' visits. Some are prone to display their preconceptions and prejudices. Most exaggerate -- they had to make their books marketable. The accounts are sometimes insightful or incredulous, often humorous and colorful, always giving the reader a vicarious experience of being there. For most of its forty-year antebellum history, Montgomery was a frontier river town. These accounts of it do not reveal moonlight and magnolias, but a rather coarse culture. The touring authors don't mince words about slavery; after all, their readers expected commentary about the most peculiar of Southern institutions. However, the writers' diverse views of slavery are as complicated and contradictory as was the institution itself. Together, these accounts sketch a fascinating world populated by individuals and with customs that would have inspired Charles Dickens had he overcome his prejudices and ventured further south than Richmond in 1842. The "Epilogue" provides a description of the first capital of the Confederacy.
