How does conscious experience arise out of the functioning of the human brain? How is it related to the behaviour that it accompanies? How does the perceived world relate to the real world? Between them, these three questions constitute what is commonly known as the Hard Problem of consciousness. Despite vast knowledge of the relationship between brain and behaviour, and rapid advances in our knowledge of how brain activity correlates with conscious experience, the answers to all three questions remain controversial, even mysterious. To many its conclusions will be surprising and even unsettling: · The entire perceived world is constructed by the brain. Hassaniya is the Arabic spoken in Mali, Mauritania, and the Western Sahara. It reflects the speech of the Arabian beduin tribes (Banu Hisan and Ma'qil) who arrived in the Maghreb via Egypt in the 11th century. Hassaniya is completely different from mainstream Maghrebi Arabic, especially that of Morocco and western Algeria, which took shape after the original Arab invasion of the 7 th century. In Mali (unlike Mauritania), Hassaniya is a minority vernacular with little exposure to the literary language. It is as "pure" a beduin Arabic as one can find in the Arab world today. This dictionary, and the volume Hassaniya Arabic (Mali): Poetic and Ethnographic Texts* in the same series, document Hassaniya as spoken in sahelian and desert areas near Timbuktu and the Medieval imperial city Gao on the Niger River. They are based primarily on recordings and lexicographic study made in the late 1980's. The dictionary functions in part as a glossary for the texts, and lexical entries include many page-line references to textual occurrences. Glosses are given in French as well as English to maximize the dictionary's usefulness to multiple audiences.

The machinery about which I am writing is found in the confectionery industry, but it is also generally used throughout the food industry and some other areas that produce items that need to be wrapped and packed for distribution. It just happens that much of my working life was spent in the confectionery industry. Similar machinery operates in the pharmaceutical industry, is used for wrapping and handling books, for wrapping blocks of fuel and for packing tea and other items. Some of the robots described are used in the glass industry, loading drinking glasses direct from hot moulding plants. They are used to load filled bottles into cases in the drinks business or shampoo for chemical manufacturers. Other industries, for example the textile industry, used machinery designed for other purposes (such as weaving), before the development of packaging machines, that worked on comparable principles. Some of the mechanisms in all of this machinery possibly have their ancestry in the great cathedral clock mechanisms from as early as the fifteenth century. Just because this book is mainly illustrated by reference to chocolate bars and sweets does not mean that that is the only application, nor does it lessen the ingenuity applied in the designs of these machines or their importance in the modem world.

The Ecologies of the Envelope theorizes the building envelope as a literal embodiment of the social, political, technological, and economic contingencies which have become embedded within it over the last century, analyzing the historical lineages, heroes and villains that helped define the complex material ecologies we see within the envelope today. While the façade is one of the most thoroughly theorized elements of architecture, it is also one of the most questioned since the end of the 19th century. Within the discipline of architecture, the traditional understanding of the façade focuses primarily on semiotic and compositional operations (such as proportional laws and linguistic codes), which are deployed on the building's surface. In contrast to this, our material and environmental theory of the envelope proposes that the exponential development of building technologies since the mid-19th century, coupled with new techniques of management and regulation, have diminished the compositional and ornamental capacities of the envelope in favor of material, quantitative, and technical performances. Rather than producing a stylistic analysis of the façade, we investigate the historical lineages of the performances, components, assembly types, and material entanglements that constitute the contemporary building envelope.
