Concealed in rows of carefully restored volumes in rare book libraries is a history of the patterns of book collecting and compilation that shaped the literature of the English Renaissance. In this early period of print, before the introduction of commercial binding, most published literary texts did not stand on shelves in discrete, standardized units. They were issued in loose sheets or temporarily stitched—leaving it to the purchaser or retailer to collect, configure, and bind them. In Bound to Read, Jeffrey Todd Knight excavates this culture of compilation—of binding and mixing texts, authors, and genres into single volumes—and sheds light on a practice that not only was pervasive but also defined the period's very ways of writing and thinking. Through a combination of archival research and literary criticism, Knight shows how Renaissance conceptions of imaginative writing were inextricable from the material assembly of texts. While scholars have long identified an early modern tendency to borrow and redeploy texts, Bound to Read reveals that these strategies of imitation and appropriation were rooted in concrete ways of engaging with books. Knight uncovers surprising juxtapositions such as handwritten sonnets collected with established poetry in print and literary masterpieces bound with liturgical texts and pamphlets. By examining works by Shakespeare, Spenser, Montaigne, and others, he dispels the notion of literary texts as static or closed, and instead demonstrates how the unsettled conventions of early print culture fostered an idea of books as interactive and malleable. Though firmly rooted in Renaissance culture, Knight's carefully calibrated arguments also push forward to the digital present—engaging with the modern library archives where these works were rebound and remade, and showing how the custodianship of literary artifacts shapes our canons, chronologies, and contemporary interpretative practices.

An important area of research in recent years involves assessing the microeconomic implications of macro-level policies--particularly those related to international trade. While a wide range of research methodologies are available for assessing the microeconomic incidence of micro-policies, as well as for assessing the effect of macro-level policies on markets and broad groups of households, there is a gap when it comes to eliciting the disaggregated household and firm level effects of trade policies. Recent research addresses this knowledge gap and the present survey offers an overview of this literature. The preponderance of the evidence from the studies encompassed by this survey points to the dominance of earnings-side effects over consumption-side effects of trade reform. This is problematic, since household surveys are notable for their underreporting of income. From the perspective of the poor, it is the market for unskilled labor that is most important. The poverty effects of trade policy often hinge crucially on how well the increased demand for labor in one part of the economy is transmitted to the rest of the economy by way of increased wages, increased employment, or both. Further econometric research aimed at discriminating between competing factor mobility hypotheses is urgently needed. The United Dutch East India Company was the first public company, preceding the formation of the English East-India Company by over 40 years. Its fame as the first public company which heralded the transition from feudalism to modern capitalism and its remarkable financial success for nearly two centuries ensure its importance in the history of capitalism. Although a publicly owned, highly complex and diversified business, and commonly agreed to be the largest and most profitable business in the 17th century, throughout its existence the Dutch East-India Company never produced public accounts of its financial affairs which would have allowed investors to judge the performance of the Company. Its financial accounting, which changed little during its lifetime, was not designed as an aid to rational investment decision-making by communicating the Company’s financial performance but to be a means of promoting sound stewardship by senior management. This study examines the contributions of accounting to the remarkable success of the Dutch East-India Company and the influences on these accounting practices. From the time that the German economic historian Werner Sombart proposed that accounting techniques, most especially double-entry bookkeeping, were critical to the development of modern capitalism and the public company, historians and accounting scholars have debated the extent and importance of these contributions. The Dutch East-India Company was a capitalistic enterprise that had a public, permanent capital and its principal objective was to continually increase profit by reinvesting its returns in the business. Rather than the organisation and management of the Dutch East-India Company reflecting the perceived benefits of a particular bookkeeping method, the supremacy that it achieved and maintained in a very hazardous business at a time of recurring conflict between European states was a consequence of the practicalities of 17th century business and The Netherlands’ unique, threatening natural environment which shaped its social and political institutions.

The entire series is a loose story of a group of people thrown together in 599 AD in a foreign land, Britain. They band together and found leadership in a quirky man named Jeffrey. Jeffrey was an average man of moral ideals, proper wit, and odd behavior who enjoys living life, and the ladies. Jeff’s unsurmountable strength is founded in the need to love others and save lives. The first book, The Beginning, displays how it all began. From the first plop into the 6th Century on forward, our first quest in that of attaining personal safety. As usual, we must fight for survival and now is during the time of the Roman Decline, when pulling troops out of England. We decided to build a castle and have this as our home. Jeffrey was Knighted by King Arthur and became king of the south-west land. We had to defend ourselves against some usual and other mythical and other mysterious beings, including aliens flying pyramids and Zeus and the Greek Gods. We went toe-to-toe with saber-tooth tigers, and creepy, freaky, spastic murderers with claws we called Tweakers, sorry about the profiling. We fought aliens from another planet, some Mexicans too. We fought giant monsters, most of which we did not know about their desire to fight. Mythical creatures came to life. Some of our foes became allies and our population of misfits grew. The King’s most trusted advisors consist of some from Jeff's past and some new people with new characteristics who must bond into the team that may survive the adventures. At every turn, there is a surprise or mystery or smile or death. They are dedicated to hard work and practice. They have vowed to do the next right thing. And they play pretty hard, everywhere.

Chapter 2 sets forth a model of discourse analysis primarily based on the systemic functional theories of M.A.K. Halliday. Chapter 3 outlines the historical-critical debate over the literary integrity of Philippians. Chapter 4 inspects the genre of Philippians, challenging rhetorical approaches to the text and proposing instead an epistolary classification, viz. 'personal, hortatory letter'. Chapter 5 focuses on the discourse structure of the letter, investigating its use of ideational, interpersonal and textual functions of Hellenistic Greek. In chapter 6, relevant issues of biblical hermeneutics are addressed.

He shows the young man that the real joy of our brief, lives centers around being awed and reverent toward the Great Chain of Being, respecting all people despite their surface differences, working hard, living healthily and naturally "like Daniel in the Old Testament." Fitzgerald teaches him the basics of a more mature manhood, open-water navigation, even the names of fish, seal, and birds. This prose-work contains many facets and angles, including a non-linear section of contemporary and 1960s social critique mimicking Kierkegaard and Wendell Berry, with satiric echoes of Swift, Voltaire--even Jimi Hendrix.
