Mansuli Valley is one of the valleys that have the longest cultural sequence starting from 235,000 to 3,000 years ago. This makes it the oldest valley in Borneo prehistory that has been dated chronometrically. Now, the prehistory of Sabah is almost in line in terms of age with other early prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia. Mansuli Valley has also contributed to deeper understandings of the Palaeolithic culture, particularly in Sabah and Southeast Asia generally in terms of the technological transformation of stone tools and the relationship with the environment especially with the fluctuations of sea level during the Pleistocene Epoch. It has also been proved that the early human migration to Borneo had started at least in the middle of the Pleistocene Epoch. This has indirectly proved that the changes of the sea level during the time play a critical role in the early human migration in Southeast Asia. Moreover, the environment and climate have also influenced the Palaeolithic societies that have led to their behavioural changes in terms of their technologies and adaptations.

The first chapter introduces basic terminology, provides a brief historical sketch, and identifies some excellent texts for background reading. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss the mechanisms of hydrolysis and condensation for nonsilicate and silicate systems. Chapter 4 deals with stabilization and gelation of sols. Chapter 5 reviews theories of gelation and examines the predicted and observed changes in the properties of a sol in the vicinity of the gel point. Chapter 6 describes the changes in structure and properties that occur during aging of a gel in its pore liquor (or some other liquid). The discussion of drying is divided into two parts, with the theory concentrated in Chapter 7 and the phenomenology in Chapter 8. The structure of dried gels is explored in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 shows the possibility of using the gel as a substrate for chemical reactions or of modifying the bulk composition of the resulting ceramic by performing a surface reaction (such as nitridation) on the gel. Chapter 11 reviews the theory and practice of sintering, describing the mechanisms that govern densification of amorphous and crystalline materials, and showing the advantages of avoiding crystallization before sintering is complete. The properties of gel-derived and conventional ceramics are discussed in Chapter 12. The preparation of films is such an important aspect of sol-gel technology that the fundamentals of film formation are treated at length in Chapter 13. Films and other applications are briefly reviewed in Chapter 14. Materials scientists and researchers in the field of sol-gel processing will find the book invaluable.

National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan

In the first decade of the twenty-first century, the biggest event of worldwide proportion was the 2008 global financial crisis, which was caused primarily by ineffective governance, failed surveillance systems, and implementation flaws. While fiscal and monetary policies succeeded in pulling many countries out of a financial freefall, most economies have performed beneath pre-recession levels as governments continued to struggle with their finances. Examining the financial crisis from the viewpoint of intangible assets provides a different perspective from traditional economic approaches. National Intellectual Capital (NIC), comprised mainly of human capital, market capital, process capital, renewal capital, and financial capital, is a valuable intangible asset and a key source of national competitive advantage in today’s knowledge economy. The authors—pioneers in the field—present extensive data and a rigorous conceptual framework to analyze the connections between the global financial crisis and NIC development. Covering the period from 2005 to 2010 across 48 countries, the authors establish a positive correlation between NIC and GDP per capita and consider the impact of NIC investment for short-term recovery and long-term risk control and strategy formulation. Each volume in a series of SpringerBriefs on NIC and the financial crisis provides in-depth coverage of the impact of the crisis, the aftermath, future prospects, and policy implications for a regional cluster. This volume focuses on China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan.

The common thread for oligarchs across history is that wealth defines them, empowers them and inherently exposes them to threats. The existential motive of all oligarchs is wealth defense. How they respond varies with the threats they confront, including how directly involved they are in supplying the coercion underlying all property claims and whether they act separately or collectively. These variations yield four types of oligarchy: warring, ruling, sultanistic and civil. Moreover, the rule of law problem in many societies is a matter of taming oligarchs. All methods are illustrated with analyses of real data examples, many from recent subject area journal articles. These analyses are highlighted in the text, and are more detailed than is typical, providing discussion of the context and background of the problem, model checking, and scientific implications. Jeff Meadows will amuse the reader with anecdotes of times growing up, meeting the love of his life Kathy, to his varied career through the ranks to Chief Superintendent. It is a fascinating journey as the youngest constable on the beat in Blackpool in 1957, to a senior detective involved in working major crime cases, to the responsibility of senior management in the Lancashire Constabulary. He had a prominent role in high profile murders including the Handless Corpse Case, an investigation that spanned the globe and was the most expensive trial in British legal history at the time, securing five life sentences. Stories of royal visits, party conferences and celebrity tomfoolery, his police service brought him three commendations and the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service. In retirement he became a driving force in several charitable organisations including the Rotary Club of Blackpool South, championing and promoting the achievements of the younger generation. Jeff Meadows QPM passed away in Nov 2018, before this book could be published. His legacy lives on, not only within its pages of a life well lived, but also in The Jeff Meadows Award for Citizenship, presented annually to a pupil at his former school Highfield Leadership Academy.

The United States maintains defense ties with as many as 60 countries, which not only enables its armed forces to maintain command globally and to project its force widely, but also enables its government to exert leverage over allies' foreign policies and military strategies. In Defending Frenemies, Jeffrey W. Taliaferro presents a historical and comparative analysis of how successive US presidential administrations have employed inducements and coercive diplomacy toward Israel, Pakistan, South Korea, and Taiwan over nuclear proliferation. Taliaferro shows that the ultimate goals in each administration, from John F. Kennedy to George H. W. Bush, have been to contain the Soviet Union's influence in the Middle East and South Asia and to enlist China as an ally of convenience against the Soviets in East Asia. Policymakers' inclinations to pursue either accommodative strategies or coercive nonproliferation strategies toward allies have therefore been directly linked to these primary objectives. Defending Frenemies is sharp examination of how regional power dynamics and US domestic politics have shaped the nonproliferation strategies the US has pursued toward vulnerable and often obstreperous allies.
