This book combines a sweeping narrative of the Civil War with a bold new look at the war’s significance for American society. Professor Hummel sees the Civil War as America’s turning point: simultaneously the culmination and repudiation of the American revolution. While the chapters tell the story of the Civil War and discuss the issues raised in readable prose, each chapter is followed by a detailed bibliographical essay, looking at all the different major works on the subject, with their varying ideological viewpoints and conclusions. In his economic analysis of slavery, Professor Hummel takes a different view than the two major poles which have determined past discussions of the topic. While some writers claim that slavery was unprofitable and harmful to the Southern economy, and others maintain it was profitable and efficient for the South, Hummel uses the economic concept of Deadweight Loss to show that slavery was both highly profitable for slave owners and harmful to Southern economic development. While highly critical of Confederate policy, Hummel argues that the war was fought to prevent secession, not to end slavery, and that preservation of the Union was not necessary to end slavery: the North could have let the South secede peacefully, and slavery would still have been quickly terminated. Part of Hummel’s argument is that the South crucially relied on the Northern states to return runaway slaves to their owners. This new edition has a substantial new introduction by the author, correcting and supplementing the account given in the first edition (the major revision is an increase in the estimate of total casualties) and a foreword by John Majewski, a rising star of Civil War studies.

Shortly after finishing my last book Aliens and Cowboys I found myself with time on my hands so I began writing songs. The driving motivation for this book began when I moved to Auburndale Florida. Polk County is a rural community (home to orange groves and sparkling fresh water lakes) this is the first time I spent any amount of time with country folks. I started listening predominately to country music and evangelists on the radio. A short time later I realized these outside influences were changing the nature of my words and themes. For nine months I lived in Polk County the rest of the time I lived with my father and brother after separating with my long time girl friend. I finished this book at King's Point in Delray Beach Florida. The selections picked for this book reflect real life after all they come from real people and true-life events. The songs/poetry in this book were inspired by people I know, people I've spoke with (in person and in chat rooms on the web). The songs are about the Cast Of Characters that have been in and out of my life for the past year. I am not sure how some of the people I wrote about will react about the stories I tell, after all they are my interpretation of their words, their tears, their hopes and yes their fears, but also their optimism, faith in god and love of life. It celebrates the human spirit that begins our everyday and never goes away. Be well, keep your head up, and see you along the road to heaven. Jeffrey Langer

Francis Willughby's Book of Games, published here for the first time, is a remarkable work and an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in early modern social history. Dating from the 1660s, it was left unfinished when the writer died in 1672 at the age of 36. Nevertheless, Willughby's manuscript, even in its unpolished form is a goldmine of detail providing a snapshot of mid seventeenth century life, language and culture. The manuscript itself lists a wide variety of sports, games and pastimes, including football, hurling, card games, tennis and children's games. As well as providing rules and a description of the various games (often with accompanying sketches to explain particular points) there are numerous fascinating snippets of related information (such as the care of fighting cocks), that bring the subject to life, whilst the section on children's games is particularly poignant. Besides the intrinsic interest of the subject matter, the fact that Willughby embarked on the project from a scientific perspective adds to the value of the book. Willughby had been admitted to the Royal Society in 1661 and for a number of years prior to that had been collaborating with the naturalist John Ray. It is clear that Willughby's Book of Games was highly influenced by his scientific pursuits and was an extension of his natural history work, utilising the same skills of systematic observation, description and classification. Providing not only a word-for word transcription of the Book of Games, this volume also contains a host of interpretative material to complement the original data. As well as a biography of Willughby and a detailed description of his manuscript, a substantial glossary of games and obsolete terms is provided, together with a bibliography of Willughby's literary remains and more general reference works. Taken together, this publication provides an unparalleled resource for scholars of early modern England.

For Zari and her lover it is a magical time as they experience each other and they both fall deeply in love very quickly. There are issues however. As happy as Zari and her lover are about being with each other, their love affair must be kept a secret between just the two of them. If Tre ever found out about the affair it would more than likely destroy his relationship with his mother, spawn hatred for her and open emotional wounds that even after given plenty of time.............may well never heal!!!!!!!!
