The day that his father walked out of the house and out of his life is a day that Jeffrey Johnson will never forget. But he also will not forget how his mother-a young woman then just thirty years old-continued faithfully to care for her family of four young children. He saw her day after day work hard to provide for the family, continue her education to move forward in her profession, and give her children a life of love, peace, and joy. The most important thing she did for them was to entrust them into the care of their loving heavenly Father, and to provide an atmosphere in which God could work in their lives. In Dialogue with Single Parents, Jeffrey Johnson brings together the lessons he learned growing up in a single-parent household with lessons from the Word of God. He shows clearly that God has something to say to single parents, and that God desires to help them to do more than just survive their circumstances-God wants them to thrive. This book offers inspiration and practical guidance to empower single parents to experience all that God has for them and their children. Author Bio: JEFFREY A. JOHNSON SR. is senior pastor of Eastern Star Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, a position he has held for over twenty-five years. This is a church "where Jesus is exalted, and the Word is explained." He and his wife Sharon Henry Johnson have four sons. This is Pastor Johnson's sixth book-the third in his Dialogue series, following Dialogue with My Daughters, and Dialogue with My Sons.
To understand who we are as Christians is to understand our beginning. Did Jesus intend to have His "church" separated from the Jewish community? Did the Apostle Paul emphasize a truncation of the Jewish cradle for this new community of unique people? What does the New Testament teach about Jesus, His followers, and the new sect He founded? Did the Church replace Israel? Do Gentile Christians need to worship in a Jewish form? Who was this man called Jesus, and what were the influences in his life? The church in the twenty-first century would do itself a disservice not to acknowledge its Jewish beginnings, or to ignore the man Jesus and the cultural mores that shaped his teaching.
In this unique treatment of the Song of Solomon, Pastor Johnson unearths the mysteries of love, sex and marriage as the Creator intended them to be understood and enjoyed."--Tony Evans, senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship. (Practical Life)

In the less than eight decades since Superman's debut in 1938, comic book superheroes have become an indispensable part of American society and the nation's dominant mythology. They represent America's hopes, dreams, fears, and needs. As a form of popular literature, superhero narratives have closely mirrored trends and events in the nation. This study views American history from 1938 to 2010 through the lens of superhero comics, revealing the spandex-clad guardians to be not only fictional characters but barometers of the place and time in which they reside. If we are not living abundant lives, how do we reclaim our lives in Christ? Jesus said, in John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Yet, so many Christians fail to live an abundant life; in fact, too often they are just getting by, just struggling to survive. But God has so much more for us! Many of us have sat passively and watched as the enemy of our souls has come, like a thief, stealing away our joy, killing our bodies, and destroying our families. We have lost the abundance in our lives that Christ died to give us. We allowed it to be taken from us while we watched apathetically, as though we were only spectators of our own lives-not followers of a risen, active, triumphant Christ. The time for sitting still and bemoaning our lot in life is over. God has empowered us to reclaim what we've lost. We can get our lives back! Get our health back! Get our minds back! Get our families back! Get our joy back! We do not have to wallow in defeat. We can make a comeback! JEFFREY A. JOHNSON, SR. is senior pastor of Eastern Star Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, a position he has held for over twenty years. This is a church "Where Jesus is Exalted, and the Word is Explained." More important to him than the size of his church, the titles he holds or the places he's been, he wants people to know that he loves Jesus. He and his wife Sharon Henry Johnson are the parents of four sons. This is his second book, following The Song of Solomon: Love, Sex and Relationships.
On a warm July day in 1979, a sixteen-year-old named Jeffrey Carrier visited the old Donnelly Cemetery in Johnson County, Tennessee, a rural county in the northeast corner of the state. He was there for more than an hour, wandering from stone to stone, writing down every name, date and epitaph. It was the beginning of a project that took him six years to complete, and when it was done, he had visited 282 cemeteries in the county and recorded more than 10,000 names. The information was published in 1985 and has been aiding genealogists and historians ever since. The original edition was a limited printing, and most of those copies have fallen apart and are no longer extant. Except for another limited printing in 2012, the book has mostly been unavailable for use. This professionally-printed edition changes that, as the information is now available to everyone, everywhere who can trace their family roots back to Johnson County, Tennessee or who has an interest in cemeteries.
In the early twentieth century, an elite group of modern-minded scientists in Germany, led by the eminent organic chemist Emil Fischer, set out to create new centers and open new sources of funding for chemical research. Their efforts led to the establishment in 1911 of the chemical institues of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of the Sciences, whose original staff included several future Nobel laureates. Although these institutes were designed to promote "free research" that would uphold German Leadership in international science, they also came to promote the integration of science in the German war effort after 1914. According to Jeffrey Johnson, the development of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes exemplifies the origins and dilemmas of one of the most significant innovations in modern science: the creation of institutions for basic research, both theoretical and practical. The Kaiser Wilhelm Society was a quasi-official institution under the "protection" of Kaiser Wilhelm II, but it received most of its funding from German industry rather than the Imperial Treasury. After 1914, however, the Kaiser's chemists and their institutes provided key support to the German war effort. Within a few months of the outbreak of World War I, the institutes had been integrated into war mobilization activities. They conducted research both in weapons, such as poison gas, and in strategic resources, especially synthetics to replace naturally produced goods cut off by Britain's blockade of German ports. By examining the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in the framework of both scientific and social change, Johnson is able to answer questions that seem puzzling if not viewed from this dual perspective, such as why German chemists pushed for institutional change at this particular time. Johnson argues that the new institutes arose from a characteristically modern tension between internationally set scientific goals and the competing national priorities of a country headed for war. Johnson's sources include the papers of Emil Fischer; the archives of several major German corporations, including Bayer, Hoechst, and Krupp; government records; and the archives of the Max Planck Society, which grew out of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society after World War II. A Bird in Your Hand is a true tale of crime, punishment, and justice in mid-20th century Ohio. Two young men set out on a joy ride across the state, looking for fun and romance, but instead they're caught up in the murder of a police officer. The story, spanning 40 years, weaves together the many aspects of their case and its aftermath. Author Frank Johnson, son of the trial's presiding judge, reveals the personal side of making life-or-death decisions. Author Jeff John, an educator and journalist, uses meticulous detail to bring court documents, interviews, and research to life. This little-known case of ambiguous justice connects in big ways to our changing legal system and the rights of the accused, from the Miranda Rights decision to the controversial Ohio governor's prisoner work program still in place today.
The tumultuous decade of the 1960s began with promise and hope, when John F. Kennedy became the youngest elected President of the United States. Kennedy promised youthful, energetic leadership, as the country headed into the latter half of the 20th century, and christened his presidencey as the "New Frontier." After a thousand days, an assassin's bullets shattered the dreams of an idealisitic generation. Following JFK's assassination, an intense personal and poltical feud between the new President, Lyndon B. Johnson, and deceased former President's younger brother, Robert F. Kennedy, dominated much of the tumultuous decade of the 1960s. Against the backdrop of assassinations, civil rights protests, the Cold War, the Space Race, and the Vietnam War, the epic duel between LBJ and RFK signficantly influenced the course of history.
