Doctorate in Death takes place in Las Cruces, a small city straddling the Chihuahuan desert and the Rio Grande Valley in southern New Mexico. Cultural anthropologist Dana Winfield receives a frantic phone call from Corey Watson, her top graduate student. There is something he desperately needs to tell her, but before he has a chance, he goes missing. Dana teams up with Travis Hitchcock, a handsome archaeologist and faculty friend, to solve the mystery of Coreys disappearance. Starting with only the torn page of a doctoral thesis found at a gas station and Travis name scrawled on a piece of paper found in Coreys apartment, Dana and Travis slowly begin to put the clues together. But circumstances conspire against them as Travis becomes the victim of a vicious accusation engineered by unknown forces, and Dana, eager for a promotion, is pressured by unwanted sexual advances. As one mystery is solved, another reaches a shocking climax in the rugged back country. Travis is called upon to use his archaeological skills in a life-and-death situation, and he rediscovers feelings long buried in the desert sand.
