Culture from the Slums explores the history of punk rock in East and West Germany during the 1970s and 1980s. These decades witnessed an explosion of alternative culture across divided Germany, and punk was a critical constituent of this movement. For young Germans at the time, punk appealed to those gravitating towards cultural experimentation rooted in notions of authenticity-endeavors considered to be more 'real' and 'genuine.' Adopting musical subculture from abroad and rearticulating the genre locally, punk gave individuals uncomfortable with their societies the opportunity to create alternative worlds. Examining how youths mobilized music to build alternative communities and identities during the Cold War, Culture from the Slums details how punk became the site of historical change during this era: in the West, concerning national identity, commercialism, and politicization; while in the East, over repression, resistance, and collaboration. But on either side of the Iron Curtain, punks' struggles for individuality and independence forced their societies to come to terms with their political, social, and aesthetic challenges, confrontations which pluralized both states, a surprising similarity connecting democratic, capitalist West Germany with socialist, authoritarian East Germany. In this manner, Culture from the Slums suggests that the ideas, practices, and communities which youths called into being transformed both German societies along more diverse and ultimately democratic lines. Using a wealth of previously untapped archival documentation, this study reorients German and European history during this period by integrating alternative culture and music subculture into broader narratives of postwar inquiry and explains how punk rock shaped divided Germany in the 1970s and 1980s.

Besides this you will find eighteen devotional messages on the work of the Holy Spirit inter-mingled throughout. Finally, each devotional features "Today's Hymn." This is the title of a hymn so that you can reflect on the song. Read through it, give it some thought, and may the Lord use it to put a song in your heart. Jeff Pepper was born and raised in Sterling, Illinois. After graduating from high school, and going out on his own to earn a living, he started attending church. He did not attend regularly though, because the church he tried did not seem to line up with what he read in his Bible at home. While working at his place of employment a man was hired that talked to him about spiritual things. This man invited him to visit the church he went to; which was Faith Baptist Church in Sterling, Illinois. This church preached the truth of God's Word. Therefore, after attending for about a year he realized this was indeed what he had been seeking. So in July of 1978 he accepted Christ as his Savior, and went on to serve faithfully there. He later married and started raising a family. He, his wife Sheila, and daughters Janna and Michelle now reside in Shannon, Illinois, In April of 2001 the Lord laid on his heart a burden to put together a devotional book using messages from pastors, evangelists, missionaries, Christian educators, and others in full-time Christian service. Now, almost ten years later this devotional is here.

It approaches the theory of quantum optics with the language of optical modes of classical wave theory, with which experimentalists are most familiar. This approach makes the transition easy from classical optics to quantum optics. The emphasis on the multimode description of an optical system is more realistic than in most quantum optics textbooks. After the theoretical part, the book goes directly to the two most basic experimental techniques in quantum optics and establishes the connection between the experiments and the theory. The applications include some key quantum optics experiments, and a few more current interests that deal with quantum correlation and entanglement, quantum noise in phase measurement and amplification, and quantum state measurement.

Jeff Necessary places you front row and center for this amazing journey. You will laugh. You might cry. You might even wonder, how is this possible? The quotes in this book are hilarious. I hope nobody finds out which one is mine (Destiny Gorum, student). This is such a great book. It highlights a teenagers insight on the world through their eyes. This is a must-read, and you will not be able to put this book down. This book is just plain fun, coupled with high school students view of life. Training young minds is a tough job (Jessica Greene, guidance counselor, North Myrtle Beach High School). As a teacher, assistant principal, and principal for twenty plus years, I can easily relate to the student statements and questions contained in this book. Currently, as director of human resources, I can envision requiring all new teachers to read both the They Said What? books. Within these pages, Jeff Necessary provides a front row seat to the shocking reality of the modern classroom. Although these books will generate much laughter, I feel it imperative that new teachers know exactly what to expect when they enter their classrooms.
