Songs of the North Woods

Edith Fowke (1913-1996) was a renowned Canadian folklorist, folk song collector, researcher, writer, and teacher who during her long career recorded nearly two thousand songs. Awarded the Order of Canada in 1978 and named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1983, Fowke's legacy is recognized by folk singers and scholars alike as the most comprehensive work in its field. Producing radio programs for the CBC throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she was responsible for discovering such eminent singers as LaRena Clark, Tom Brandon, and O. J. Abbott. O. J. Abbott was one of Fowke's most prolific singers, as she collected and recorded over 120 of his songs, 66 of them transcribed for this collection. The songs, mostly of Irish origin, were popular among settlers to the Ottawa valley and in the lumber camps of northern Ontario in the late 1800s. Born in England in 1872, Abbott worked throughout Ontario and Quebec in lumber camps before settling in Hull, Quebec. He recorded numerous records for the Folkways label and performed with such folk heroes as The Travellers, Ian and Sylvia, and Pete Seeger. Songs of the North Woods as sung by O.J. Abbott and collected by Edith Fowke includes a detailed musical analysis that outlines the meter, scale, and range of each song, an index that indicates where each song can be found on the original source tapes, and extensive field notes, interviews, and recording details.

Having walked in the farmers wifes shoes during productive times and also during times of adversity and crop failures, the author understood her neighbors pain and tears when their family homes and farm land went into foreclosure. She realized that if not for the grace of God, it could have been their home, their property. She recalls gazing at a field of corn stalks drying because of drought and praying for rain as she searched the sky for a tiny dark rain cloud. Her family endured the lean years along with the productive years. Starting their life together with nothing, God met their needs and later blessed their farming endeavors. They lived the American dream of owning a few acres in the country to farm and a new home to enjoy.

There were many exciting adventures, in my book hardships and what people had put me through. Also the trouble that my son and daughters had, with their father, he was so mean to us all. If he had been a real father, they would not have gone astray. Towards the end thing were better; I also have my family’s history.

The Emerald The Emperors Egg The Emperors Egg belonged to one of the great Emperors of Peru. Where and how it was found and the mystery surrounding its disappearance. Full of adventure and strange customs. The Pearl Spat Tells His Tale Spat, the oyster, tells a wonderful tale about himself and his great pearl. The Opal Black Beauty and Muggereedoo This was the actual story about how one of my teachers in grade school had a beautiful black opal ring. Where it came from and the exciting story of what happened to it makes a charming story. Silver Wandor the Dragon A true story my grandmother told me about the lovely silver dragon centerpiece that was on their dining room table during the Civil War and how her family brought it to Texas from Tennessee, what became of it, and how they survived. Most interesting history and strong characters. Gold A Murder Unsolved The true story of my grandfather and how his death happened in Ely, Nevada in 1907 during the gold strike there. A really good story of the times and circumstances. The Meteorite Star Jewel from the Universe A truly fascinating story of this rock from outer space, its journey, where it landed (near the Great Wall of China), the Chinese family that found it and the luck it brought them, and how I came to have it.
