The author, a well-known astronomer himself, describes the evolution of astronomical ideas, touching only lightly on most of the instrumental developments. Richly illustrated, the book starts with the astronomical ideas of the Egyptian and Mesopotamian philosophers, moves on to the Greek period and then on to the golden age of astronomy, that of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and Newton. Finally, Pecker concludes with modern theories of cosmology. Written with astronomy undergraduates in mind, this is a fascinating survey of astronomical thinking.

This book demonstrates that the availability and critical study of the 500,000 scrolls which the Library of Alexandria probably contained made possible the production of some remarkable pieces of Alexandrian literature and philosophy, the considerable increase in historical and geographical knowledge, as well as outstanding contributions to the history of mathematics, astronomy, mechanics, and medicine. The book recalls how Alexandria was founded and became the most beautiful city in the ancient world. It also recalls the incredible series of wars, popular revolts, assassinations, palace intrigues, and debaucheries that brought about the inexorable decline of this city and its Library.

Originally published in 1991. Philoponus’ long commentary on Aristotle’s definition of light sets up the major concerns, both in optics and theory of light, that are discussed here. Light was of special interest in Neoplatonism because of its being something incorporeal in the world of natural bodies. Light therefore had a special role in the philosophical analysis of the interpenetration of bodies and was also a paradigm for the soul-body problem. The book contains much about the physiology of vision as well as the propagation of light. Several chapters investigate the philosophical theory behind what came to be known as ‘multiplication of species’ in medieval light theory. These issues in the history of science are placed within an analysis of Neoplatonic development of the distinction between Aristotle’s kinesis and energeia. The book treats Philoponus’ philosophy of mathematical science from the point of view of matter, quantity, and three-dimensionality.
