Winnifred Eaton, better known under her Japanese pseudonym, Onoto Watanna, was of English and Chinese heritage, but born and raised in Canada. She published over a dozen novels and hundreds of short stories, magazine articles, and screenplays during the first half of the twentieth century. Her romances featuring Japanese and Eurasian heroines sold widely. However, by the time of her death in 1954, most of her books were out of print. Winnifred (unlike her sister, the better-known writer Edith Eaton) has been a troubling figure for Asian Americanists. She attempted to disguise her ethnic heritage, writing under a Japanese pen name, and in legal documents, she usually claimed a white racial identity. Scholars have noted her use of Orientalist stereotypes in her novels, and even though she depicted a broad range of non-Asian characters - such as Irish maids and cowboys - her pottrayals often relied on the accepted stereotypes of the day. Rather than dismiss her characterizations as evasions of the topics that readers today wish she had explored, Jean Lee Cole asks why Winnifred Eaton may have chosen the subjects she did. Historically, alternative media have been viewed as fundamental, albeit at times culturally peripheral, forces in social change. In this book, however, Kenix argues that these media do not uniformly subvert the hierarchies of access that are so central to mainstream media - in fact, their journalistic norms and routines have always been based on the professional standards of the mainstream. Kenix goes on to posit the perception of 'mainstream' and 'alternative' as a misconception. She argues that, although alternative media can - and do - construct distinct alternative communications, they have always existed on the same continuum as the mainstream and the two will continue to converge. Through comparative analysis, this book argues that many alternative and mainstream media are merging to create a continuous spectrum rooted in commercial ideology. Indeed, much of what is now considered alternative media actually draws very little from principles of the independent press, whereas many contemporary mainstream media now use communication techniques more commonly associated with media that do not operate for financial gain. This book puts forward a controversial but convincing argument around the relationship between alternative and mainstream media, drawing on examples from the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand to strengthen and develop the central premise.

This book evolved out of a conference which was held because of our conviction that prenatal screening and diagnostic techniques provide carers with a two-edged sword which can do both good and harm - often at the same time to the same person. The conference ('The Human Side of Prenatal Diagnosis') dealt with emotional, ethical and legal issues in prenatal screening and diagnosis. It took place in March 1992 at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in London and was attended by obstetricians, paediatricians, geneticists, midwives and ultrasonographers from the North West Thames Health Region. The demand for places at the conference far exceeded the number of places avail able and many people who attended expressed the hope that we would be organizing similar conferences in the future. This confirmed our belief that we were not the only ones preoccupied with the human issues raised by the new technologies and encouraged us to work towards this publication. Prenatal diagnosis and the possibility of selective termination of affected pregnancies is part of a wider move towards repro ductive choice. Like contraception and assisted conception, it can make a major difference to the lives of some people. In our culture, we tend to view choice as a good thing. We look upon it as our right to choose our occupation, our partner, the place where we live, the books that we read and the way that we vote.

This book focuses on iterative solvers and preconditioners for mixed finite element methods. It provides an overview of some of the state-of-the-art solvers for discrete systems with constraints such as those which arise from mixed formulations. Starting by recalling the basic theory of mixed finite element methods, the book goes on to discuss the augmented Lagrangian method and gives a summary of the standard iterative methods, describing their usage for mixed methods. Here, preconditioners are built from an approximate factorisation of the mixed system. A first set of applications is considered for incompressible elasticity problems and flow problems, including non-linear models. An account of the mixed formulation for Dirichlet’s boundary conditions is then given before turning to contact problems, where contact between incompressible bodies leads to problems with two constraints. This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in the field of numerical methods and scientific computing.

The first part familiarizes the reader with the specifics of cell-film interactions that need to be taken into account for successful application of the LbL method in biological environments. The fourth and last part focuses on larger-scale biomedical applications of the LbL method such as engineered tissues and implant coatings.
