A major area of interest in French geomorphology during the last quarter of a cen- tury has been to understand denudation chronologies and the legacies of environ- mental change in shield regions. The mechanisms and consequences on landform patterns of differential erosion in plutonic, metamorphic and related cover rocks have been approached from the double angle of structural landforms in the landscape and petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical analysis in the laboratory. The detailed study of layered igneous intrusions has been particularly helpful in making progress more generally in the understanding of crystalline landform configurations of base- ment terrains. The Laboratoire de Geographic Physique CNRS-URAiai. nowreformed as twin research units (Paris: CNRS-UMR8591, and Clermont-Ferrand: CNRS-UPRES- A6042), and itsprecursor research group at the Sorbonne under the guidance of Pierre Birot, constituted the spawning ground for French research on the geomorphology of basement terrains. Alain Godard masterminded much of the research synthesised in this volume, which isbased on apreviously publishededition in French. YannickLageat and Jean-Jacques Lagasquie have not only upheld the spirit of this school of geomor- phology but also introduced novel concepts and methods to the investigation of crys- talline terrains. They have also maintained geomorphological research abreast of con- temporarydevelopments in the geosciences. YanniGunnell translated the original text into English, adapted the figures and introduced a measure of editing, updating and explicating in order to make the volume more accessible - not only to a non franco- phone audience, but to an audience unfamiliarwith the intellectual undercurrents and 30 years.

Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in France deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self-regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in France will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.
This is a new edition of the highly influential 'Synthesis Report' (School provision for Gypsy and Traveller children) commissioned by the European Commission & first published in 1986 which led to the adoption of the Resolution on school provision for Gypsy and Traveller Children by the Council & Ministers of Education, 22 May 1989.
A compilation of published ethnobotanical data pertaining to all of the Algonkian speaking peoples of eastern North America and field data concerning the Algonquin bands of the Ottawa River drainage and the Cree bands of the St. Maurice drainage of western Quebec. These data help illuminate past subsistence patterns, the seasonal movements of the Algonquin, and the relationship between Algonquin bands and other Algonkian speakers. They also indicate that the Algonquin previously enjoyed a subarctic subsistence orientation similar to that of the Cree and other northerners in contrast to their Iroquoian neighbours thus necessitating a redefinition of the eastern subarctic culture area.
In the summer of 1963, anthropologist Jean Briggs journeyed to the Canadian Northwest Territories (now Nunavut) to begin a seventeen-month field study of the Utku, a small group of Inuit First Nations people who live at the mouth of the Back River, northwest of Hudson Bay. Living with a family as their “adopted” daughter—sharing their iglu during the winter and pitching her tent next to theirs in the summer—Briggs observed the emotional patterns of the Utku in the context of their daily life. In this perceptive and highly enjoyable volume the author presents a behavioral description of the Utku through a series of vignettes of individuals interacting with members of their family and with their neighbors. Finding herself at times the object of instruction, she describes the training of the child toward achievement of the proper adult personality and the handling of deviations from this desired behavior.
In this translation of the French edition (L'U. de Saint-'etienne, 1999), the author treats the interrelated factors that inform plants' adaptations to their environments. Applying ecophysiological principles to identify mechanisms of dysfunction in ecosystems, he presents data-based cases for: less stressful growing methods (e.g., using cultivars
The Collection of ICC Arbitral Awards 2016¿2020 contains extracts of cases handled by the ICC Court of Arbitration, one of the world’s most respected arbitral institutions. This most recent collection supplements seven previous and successful volumes containing awards from the period 1974 to 2015. This collection is a practical reference tool, containing three types of useful indexes incorporating information from all three volumes: a consolidated analytical table, in both English and French, contains extensive cross-references based on the terminology used in awards and case notes; a chronological index lists the awards; a keyword index, also provided in both languages, allows the reader to locate the material of interest quickly and easily. In addition to providing a wealth of information in a highly accessible manner, this book includes case notes end expert commentaries on the awards. This publication is an indispensable reference work for anyone interested in international arbitration and in the reasoning of international arbitrators on the interpretation and application of contractual clauses, international conventions, and the law of international trade. It is invaluable to both scholars and practitioners involved in the drafting and negotiation of international commercial contracts and the resolution of international commercial disputes.
