In this book, Mary Jean Corbett explores fictional and non-fictional representations of Ireland's relationship with England throughout the nineteenth century. Through postcolonial and feminist theory, she considers how cross-cultural contact is negotiated through tropes of marriage and family, and demonstrates how familial rhetoric sometimes works to sustain, sometimes to contest the structures of colonial inequality. Analyzing novels by Edgeworth, Owenson, Gaskell, Kingsley, and Trollope, as well as writings by Burke, Carlyle, Engels, Arnold, and Mill, Corbett argues that the colonizing imperative for 'reforming' the Irish in an age of imperial expansion constitutes a largely unrecognized but crucial element in the rhetorical project of English nation-formation. By situating her readings within the varying historical and rhetorical contexts that shape them, she revises the critical orthodoxies surrounding colonial discourse that currently prevail in Irish and English studies, and offers a fresh perspective on important aspects of Victorian culture.
Movement Disorders in Children brings the combined expertise and experience of two world-known authorities to the systematic and practical study of movement disorders in infancy and childhood. Aimed at the clinicians and professionals who manage children with these disorders, Emilio Fernandez-Alvarez and Jean Aicardi cover not only the well-known diseases, but also the less well-known conditions, such as ‘transient’ and ‘paroxysmal’ movement disorders. It is the first time all the available information, currently spread throughout journals and individual chapters in other books, has been brought together in one volume and specifically directed towards the care of children with movement disorders. With its clinical emphasis, full coverage and extensive but selective references, this book will be essential reading for child neurologists, pediatricians and physiotherapists.
Two former close friends confront each other again after fourteen years, on opposite sides of a conflict, deep inside war-torn Angola. Both were U.S. immigrants. Both had wanted to be Roman Catholic priests. One had been in love with the other's sister. Dieter ("Deke") Koenig, a former Navy SEAL decorated for heroism in Vietnam, is a successful investment banker at a personal crossroads. Raúl Arrocha, a deeply bitter man, is a senior officer in the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces and recognized as a brilliant tactician. Their lives will explosively collide, preempted by the efforts of a Texas oilman and members of the South African Defense Force, each party wanting to insure a rebel victory in Angola, but for very different reasons. Koenig and a nucleus of former SEALs lead a team of elite, combat-tested South African paratroops in a daring mission deep behind enemy lines. Operasie Aambeeld (Operation Anvil) involves a swift tactical assault and a complex exfiltration. However, not everyone wants to see the team succeed, significantly raising the stakes for men that are trained to never quit. And through this ordeal, Deke realizes a great deal about himself, about his former classmate Raúl, and about what in life is truly important. His only chance to set everything right again is to survive . . .
