The public space of democracies is constructed in a context that is marked by the digital transformation of the economy and society. This construction is carried out primarily through deliberation. Deliberation informs and guides both individual and collective action. To shed light on the concept of deliberation, it is important to consider the rationality of choice; but what type of rationality is this? References to economic reason are at once widespread, crucial and controversial. This book therefore deals with arguments used by individuals based on the notions of preferential choice and rational behavior, and also criticizes them. These arguments are examined in the context of the major themes of public debate that help to construct the contemporary public space: "populism", social insurance, social responsibility and environmental issues. Economic Reason and Political Reason underlines the importance of the pragmatist shift of the 2000s and revisits, through the lens of this new approach, the great utilitarian and Rawlsian normative constructs that dominated normative political economics at the end of the 20th century. Alternative approaches, based on the concept of deliberative democracy, are proposed and discussed.

The main feature of this book is the emphasis on "practice". This approach, unusual in the relativistic literature, may be clarified by quoting some problems discussed in the text: - the analysis of rocket acceleration to relativistic velocities - the influence of gravitational fields on the accuracy of time measurements - the operation of optical rotation sensors - the evaluation of the Doppler spectrum produced by the linear (or ro- tional) motion of an antenna or scatterer - the use of the Cerenkov effect in the design of millimeter-wave power generators - the influence of the motion of a plasma on the transmission of electrom- netic waves through this medium. A correct solution of these (and analogous) problems requires the use of re lativistic principles. This remark remains valid even at low velocities, since first-order terms in (v/c) often playa fundamental role in the equations. The "applicational" approach used in the text should be acceptable to space engineers, nuclear engineers, electrical engineers, and more generally, ap plied physicists. Electrical engineers, in particular, are concerned with re lativity by way of the electrodynamics of moving bodies. This discipline is of decisive importance for power engineers, who are confronted with problems such as - the justification of a forcing function (-D~/Dt) in the circuit equation of a moving loop - a correct formulation of Maxwell's equations in rotating coordinate systems - the resolution of "sliding contact" paradoxes - a theoretically satisfying analysis of magnetic levitation systems.

This book presents a new concurrent logic programming language called Conclog and a methodology for programming in it. Conclog was designed bytaking the ideal features of logic programming as reference, rather than by concentrating directly on operational tricks to ensure efficiency. This leads to quite easy declarative programming. Concern for soundness and completeness ensures that multi-directional and multi-solution correct procedures can be coded quite straightforwardly. Assuming suitable hypotheses on their uses, they can be transformed into very efficient versions thanks to the introduction of appropriate control information. Correctness-preserving properties are given for that purpose. The designof Conclog involves three steps. First, a sound and complete parallel execution model of Horn clause programs is proposed which reduces subgoals of conjunctions independently and uses a calculus for reconciling inconsistent bindings. Second, this is extended to handle negation as completely as possible. Third, a minimal and reasonably complete set of extra-logical features are defined for optimization and practical purposes. The second part of the book presents a methodology for constructing Conclog in a rigorous way. This covers the entire programming process, from informal specifications via logic descriptions to efficient programs. The methodology can be adapted to other languages.
