Illusion has many real examples in nature. This working table I am writing on, a piece of wood, is so firm, so rigid, so static that it is hard to believe that literally trillions of electrons in it are moving almost at the speed of light. The Journey tells the stories of professional and personal ventures from my mother's Kindergarten homeschooling till post-Doctoral studies and beyond in nine different countries. It is a saga of friendship with so many families and colleagues in diverse cultures, a true anecdote of universal brotherhood.
Essentially, Beyond the Waves is a natural extension of my first bilingual book: Waves/Olas that has fifty poems in English and twenty four in Spanish; none is a translation of the other. In Beyond the Waves all the poems are in English. The new Spanish poems are yet to come in a separate volume.
This book develops and examines the concepts and strategies for rural empowerment through the formation of a community-driven social knowledge management (SKM) framework aided by social technology. The framework is aimed at mobilizing knowledge resources to bridge the rural–urban knowledge divide while securing rural empowerment using digital connections and social collaborations built on strategies of self-sustenance and self-development. With key empirical findings supplemented by relevant theoretical structures, case studies, illustrative figures and a lucid style, the book combines social technologies and social development to derive a social knowledge management platform. It shows how the proposed SKM framework can enhance knowledge capabilities of rural actors by facilitating connection among rural–urban entities through formation of purposive virtual communities, which allow social agents to create, modify and share content collaboratively. A Town by the River is a fictional tale that revolves around Anirban, the protagonist, his college days, his first love and brief flirtation with left-wing politics considered fashionable in those days and his childhood. The first few chapters of the book dwell at length on the prevalent political situation when political parties were tremendously hostile to one another. Vendettas by way of slaying were a common sight. Several young lives were lost in such turbulent political situations. Stringing together a variety of events and characters in a narrative canvas, the book focuses on the time and life in a small town, where the townsfolk, especially the kids, always welcomed carefree excitements from otherwise subdued life, be it in the form of festivities, football matches or simple outings. The strength of the book lies in its descriptive details of the milieu, the people and more importantly, the charming river. Earthy smell and myriad of colours and the river that lazily went past the town held a special attraction for the young and old. Notwithstanding the undertone of caste and religion, the townsfolk cherished human relationships that transcended the religious divide. Its poignant style of narration would appeal to a wide readership beyond the geographical boundaries.

Children in poor countries are subjected to exploitation characterized by low wages and long hours of work, as well as by unclean, unhygienic and unsafe working and living conditions, and, more importantly, by deprivation from education, all of which hampers their physical and mental development. Child labour is a complex issue, and clearly it has no simple solution. This book sheds some understanding of its root causes. The book attempts to delve into many of the important theoretical aspects of child labour and suggests policies that could indeed be useful in dealing with the problem under diverse situations using alternative multisector general equilibrium models.

This book contains a wealth of research combined with almost fifty years of field experience to present this comprehensive review of resident and migratory avian species in the coastal mangrove forests of the Indian-Bangladesh Sundarbans and hinterland. The book gives a general account of the diversity and distribution of resident and migratory avian species with special emphasis on their ecology in a changing climate. It provides a detailed reference source, covering mangroves’ spatial heterogeneity and bird diversity; impact of mangroves and non-mangrove vegetation on the birds including provision for food, shelter and reproduction; role of birds in the food web; relationships among bird communities; and impacts on the habitats of the birds. The study of the 580 species in the region shows those better able to adapt to changing environments, and those more sensitive to climate change. Species that are relatively short-lived but reproduce very easily, are able to adapt and respond quickly to changes. Threatened species may be able to recover if governments, wildlife officials, non-government conservationists and other stakeholders can act quickly to support them.
This book contains well-researched (literature review/field surveys) and personal experience on the origin and adaptation of Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), the only large carnivore species inhabiting the mangrove forests across the world. The Bengal tiger population in this mangrove habitat is isolated from other mainland populations and exhibits certain distinctive morphological adaptations. Unlike the mainlanders, these islanders are much smaller (suggesting insular dwarfism), more muscular with leaner frame and lesser body mass (±100 kg). The stress factor associated with changes in their natural habitat and the availability of the smaller prey species is often related to such phenomenon. Apart from the long-stretch swimming, the tiger has adapted to changed food habits and become omnivore. Loss and degradation of the mangrove habitat has caused severe decline of the tiger population. Tiger conservation within and beyond the protected areas is based on the ethical issues- “biodiversity, aesthetic values and integrity” as well as management of the mangrove ecosystem challenged by development works and anthropogenic activities. A published book highlighting the updated information on the migratory behaviour, morphological and behavioural adaptations of the Bengal tiger in the mangrove eco-system is not readily available. This monograph is ideal for researchers, postgraduate and graduate students in zoology, botany, ecology and conservation. This comprehensive treatise will also serve professionals, such as foresters, environmentalists, conservationists, resource managers, planners, government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs and naturalists.

My autumn poems aspire to go through a short winter before entering into my poems of springtime, just like a spring that jumps from season to season.
The third side of a coin is essentially the one that connects the other two sides: the head and the tail. This analogy is used throughout the book to emphasize the importance of mastery learning in any profession, such as medicine, law, or engineering. Mastery learning is the essential outcome of uniting the two flat faces of a coin with the help of the third circular side. In any profession, the two flat faces of the coin are theory and practice, and the third side is the testing. The author gives examples from his more than fifty years of experience in engineering practice and engineering teaching to prove that mastery learning is essential. In the very rapidly changing pace of technology today, any curriculum that ignores mastery learning is bound to produce obsolete engineers.
In the West Bengal election of 2021, the longest state election in the history of India, Mamata Banerjee won the khela, and the BJP lost the plot. How did this happen? The author, Jayanta Ghosal, travelled to all the districts of West Bengal and unearthed certain key factors that helped the Trinamool win the state. For instance, there was a massive gap in the BJP's understanding of Bengali identity, which Mamata was able to exploit. An 'overdose' of central intervention, ranging from paramilitary forces to intelligence agencies to target key TMC leaders, added to the BJP's disconnect with voters. Increasingly, the state felt the divide between New Delhi and Bengal grow.
