In an attempt to abolish prostitution, Sweden criminalised the purchase of sex in 1999, while simultaneously decriminalising its sale. In so doing, it set itself apart from other European states, promoting itself as the pioneer of a radical approach to prostitution. What has come to be referred to as ‘the Swedish model’ has been enormously influential, and has since been adopted and proposed by other countries. This book establishes the outcomes of this law – and the law’s justifying narratives – for the dynamics of Swedish sex work, and upon the lives of sex workers. Drawing on recent fieldwork undertaken in Sweden over several years, including qualitative interviewing and participant observation, Jay Levy argues that far from being a law to be emulated, the Swedish model has had many detrimental impacts, and has failed to demonstrably decrease levels of prostitution. Criminalising the Purchase of Sex: Lessons from Sweden utilises a wealth of respondent testimony and secondary research to redress the current lack of primary academic research and to contribute to academic discussion on this politically-charged and internationally relevant topic. Although fiction, the story is based on actual events, the tornados that struck Codell, Kansas on the same day for three consecutive years, 1916, 1917, and 1918. Early 1900s, Pennsylvania farm boy Harley Coolbaugh believes he is destined for great things and they have nothing to do with farming. Harley is headed to the land of opportunity. Harley is going to California. His trip is a great adventure, but he runs out of money in Kansas and needs to get a job to fund the completion of his journey. Fate leads him to County Sheriff, Osborne "Ozzy" Hill, who happens to be looking for a deputy and Harley will fit the bill just fine. Harley is hired and trained and his first major case is the murder of three Gypsies which some in law enforcement have deemed unsolvable. To complicate matters, his investigation is hampered by the townsfolk who believe the curse imposed on them by the dying Gypsy is real. Twists and turns are the rule of the day, but Harley vows the killer will be brought to justice. His trip to California will have to wait.

An industrial region in the UK is the primary setting, but there are scenes from overseas locations too. Spectator sport is a passion; both pro football (soccer) and college basketball are featured as the various family members travel far and wide to support their teams.
