Through original speculations on the surprisingly complementary concepts of simultaneity and delay, and new interpretations of the great philosophers of time, this book proposes an innovative theory of staggered time. In the early 20th Century, Bergson and Husserl (following Einstein) made Simultaneity-what it means for events to occur at the same time-a central motif in philosophy. In the late 20th Century, Derrida and Deleuze instead emphasized Delay-events staggered over distant times. This struggle between convergent and staggered time also plays out in 20th Century aesthetics (especially music), politics, and the sciences. Despite their importance in the history of philosophy, this is the first book to comprehensively examine the concepts of simultaneity and delay. By putting simultaneity and delay into a dialectical relation, this book argues that time in general is organized by elastic rhythms. Lampert's concepts describe the time-structures of such diverse phenomena as atonal music, political decision-making, neuronal delays, leaps of memory and the boredom of waiting; and simultaneities and delays in everyday experience and behaviour.

Something about the harkening wind stitches a loop in time calling forth a history hindsight annually edits, as the forces that inform the authorship of memories work their disclosures and distortions. When fall really arrives, it will bring to our semitropical savannah, if not a genuine chill, at least welcome relief from summer's stunning heat, and the ordinary experiences of three months' time: school clothes to buy, schedules to keep, leaves to rake, all burdened with the wet colorless stretches National Geographic never features. It will bring, too, the evidence that local heroes and sweethearts belong to a new generation, and that what once seemed unforgettable has been forgotten. For these young people, Stanley Roger Simmons is a plaque on the wall at the high school; Jefferson Sands Mc Callister, a face on a football trading card; Charles Pendleton Drennan, Jr., a young trial lawyer just beginning to make a name for himself. Few of them ever heard of Mark Jansen or Candy Atchison. If they are unusually curious, they may be able to attach faces to these names by poring over old newspaper clippings and some of the memorabilia in the school library, but they can do no more. The faces and the names lie on the pages, and the story they tell is strange and sad, but sooner or later the young readers say to themselves that it was a long time ago, when things were really weird, and they go about the human business of cropping their own memories from the profusion of detail that is everyday life. Someday-- perhaps even now--some few, who by inclination or training tune themselves to the contrapuntal melody of the world, will recognize a summer morning as a false autumn, and taste its once-and future character. But that is all. Only for me, and for a few others whose victories and triumphs, whose clumsy acts and blind omissions appear on or just behind those pages, does that bright annual harbinger make the dead walk and fists clench helpless again, as if that fall lived in time as truly as the crisp taste of its revenant rests a while in the backs of our throats before the rest of summer bums it gone again. One such day arrived in August 1970, when I was sitting at my desk in the room I was to occupy my senior year in college. I had returned to school early, by special permission, to get a head start on my honors thesis. Before that day was done, I had put away forever my notes for that project and begun another, on which I wrote steadily for most of the year. The result of those labors was the document that follows. In the end, my thesis advisor accepted it in lieu of my original project--a gesture for which I was deeply grateful, as it enabled me to graduate with my class. He seemed to understand my need to write it, and write it then, not later. In a sense, he said, I had delivered what I promised: a work of history, written from original sources. And he invited me to consider the writer's dilemma, shared by all who try to capture the truth: when the sources are fresh, so are the passions that warp judgment; when time brings perspective, the materials have frozen into shapes that, like photographs, show only one side, and hoard their secrets always. Another such day arrived today, and, as I have done so many times before, I took the document from my drawer again and began to read.

Once a Marine...always a Marine." I heard that expression countless times growing up in reference to my father, Roger Jamieson. He was a World War II era Marine officer. He was one of 17 million Americans who put their lives on hold to defend our great nation. He suffered from fleas and jungle rot, Dengue Fever, dysentery and Hepatitis A. He was wounded twice and suffered the loss of his entire platoon. He also lost his cousin, David, who was killed in action. This is a story about my father's life, his upbringing and subsequent training in the Marines. It is a story about the battles he faced along the way; some internal and some external. It is also a story about a father and son revisiting old battlefields and reliving bad memories in the quest for closure. Roger would say that he didn't do anything special or different from anyone else. In the end, he, his extended family and neighborhood sacrificed and suffered like all Americans did during the war: separation, loneliness, illness, injury and death of loved ones and comrades. But to me, my father was a brave man and my hero. And like millions of his fellow servicemen and women, when the war was over, Roger married, found work and raised a family and tried to put the war behind him. We kids all knew about the Marines. We were indoctrinated and believed they were the top branch in all the U.S. Armed Forces. Most of my early recollections about World War II were based on the Hollywood heroics of John Wayne, the television series, "Combat" and the like. My understanding about what our World War II veterans did was superficial, at best. In 1994, while watching a documentary on the 50th anniversary of D-Day Normandy, I began to think about my dad and what he must have gone through in the Pacific. I knew he had quietly harbored a lot of guilt and pain over the years. It became my goal and passion to help him experience as much healing as possible. Thus, we joined a reunion tour to Okinawa and took side tours to Guam and Saipan. The year of preparation and the trip yielded many unexpected surprises and discoveries. Part One of this book chronicles Roger Jamieson's life growing up in New Jersey and continues through his Marine Corps career. Part Two is a story of rediscovery in which my dad and I retrace his steps as a Marine officer with the hope of coming to term with his past. His book suggests transsexuality, with its extraordinary conjunctions of body and narrative, as an identity story that transitions across the body/language divide that currently stalls poststucturalist thought. The form and approach of Second Skins works to cross other important and parallel divides. In addition to analyzing transsexual textual accounts, the book includes some 30 photographic portraits of transsexuals-- poignant attempts by transsexuals to present themselves unmediated to the world except by the camera. And the author does not shy from exposure himself. Interjecting the personal into his theoretical discussion and close textual work throughout the book, Prosser reads and writes his own body, his purpose in that stylistic crossing to stake out transsexuality--and hence this very book--as his own body's narrative.

By examining this often overlooked tradition, Corrin attempts to confront the perception that Catholicism in the modern age has invariably been an institution of reaction that is highly suspicious of liberalism and progressive social reform. Catholic Intellectuals and the Challenge of Democracy charts the efforts of key Catholic intellectuals, primarily in Britain and the United States, who embraced the modern world and endeavored to use the legacies of their faith to form an alternative, pluralistic path that avoided both socialist collectivism and capitalism. In this sweeping volume, Corrin discusses the influences of Cecil and G. K. Chesterton, H. A. Reinhold, Hilaire Belloc, and many others on the development of Catholic social, economic, and political thought, with a special focus on Belloc and Reinhold as representatives of reactionary and progressive positions, respectively. He also provides an in-depth analysis of Catholic Distributists’ responses to the labor unrest in Britain prior to World War I and later, in the 1930s, to the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War and the forces of fascism and communism.

Her children were taken from her; she never saw them again. Her mother worked for years to clear her name, enlisting the president of the United States and successive ambassadors, including Robert Todd Lincoln. Decades later, a gruesome diary was discovered that made Maybrick's husband a prime Jack the Ripper suspect.
