Australia’s master of undead horror returns with a grunge-soaked tale of love and vampirism in ’90s Seattle. Charlie died in Nevada, 1973, after seeing Led Zeppelin live on stage and making the wrong choice on the long drive home. Corey meets him at a TAD gig seventeen years later and feels an immediate attraction. They both swear their night together will be a onetime thing, but neither can stay away. Corey and Charlie spend two decades building a life together, a mortal and vampire in love, but there are some things Corey’s not willing to give up. She can move cities when Charlie’s eternal youth raises suspicion and she can rebuild her career as a music journalist after every disruption to their life, but as she gets older, it’s harder and harder to be satisfied with their nocturnal existence. Then a moment of weakness delivers Charlie and Corey the one thing they never expected to have…and their relationship gets more complicated than either of them ever dreamed. "A punk-noir Only Lovers Left Alive. Edgy, bloody and surprising. Cruel Nights shows Nahrung's just getting better and better." Angela "A.G." Slatter, award-winning author of The Briar Book of the Dead. "No-one writes vampires like Nahrung. A bloody perfect cocktail of grunge, love and angry hearts: this book sings." Trent Jamieson, author of Day Boy and The Stone Road. "Compelling, dark and bittersweet. I've never read, or loved, a vampire story quite like Cruel Nights. Nahrung takes familiar horror tropes and creates something completely new, injecting them with grunge, love and intrigue. It's extraordinary." Steven Paulsen, author of Shadows on the Wall and Dream Weaver.
ABOUT 2011, when I was working on the novel Blood and Dust, the first of my Vampires in the Sunburnt Country duology, I found my former police detective Phillip Reece musing about the fateful day that he stumbled into the shadow world of Maximilian von Schiller's vampire organisation: 'The moment he'd faced Mira in West End and said yes.' But what was that moment? I had half an idea that his role as a Special Branch detective in 1970s Brisbane had brought him into contact with Maximilian's right-hand weapon, Mira, and the details didn't matter so much. But as Reece developed as a character, the facts came to matter, if only so his reflections on his past had veracity and consistency. The reader didn't need to know the specifics but I did. And so I penned this 'origin' story of a major moment in Reece's life, and Mira's too, to some extent: a moment that would come to ensnare Kevin Matheson - mechanic, renegade, vampire.

Bill 'EL Wingador' Simmons, Sonya 'The Black Widow' Thomas, David 'Coondog' O'Karma, Bill 'EL Wingador' Simmons, Sonya 'The Black Widow' Thomas, David 'Coondog' O'Karma, Eric 'Badlands' Booker, Timothy 'Eater X' Janus - just a few of the stars of one of America's fastest growing sports: competitive eating. In a country in which a third of the population is clinically obese, competitive eating has made the leap from trestle tables and paper napkins to stadium arenas - in the past two years, more than 1.4 million households have tuned in to Nathan's hot dog contest on ESPN. Beginning with a trip to Japan in search of the elusive (and surprising slim-line) champion Takeru Kobayashi and ending up at the sport's annual grand finale in Coney Island, Jason Fagone spends a year with the stars of the scene, watching as they eat their way into (or out of) oblivion, and finding out just what compels a 'gurgitator' to force down forty-six dozen oysters in ten minutes. Wickedly funny and devastatingly insightful, Jason Fagone uses this weirdest of sports as a lens through which to examine the dark side of the American Dream - the never-ending quest for wealth, celebrity, possessions and food. And along the way, he uncovers the wonderfully human stories at the heart of this seemingly unnourished corner of American culture. Bigger, better, richer, fatter, Insatiable unlocks a world we all need to face up to. Dig In.
