From that point on - Galileo, Issac Newton, Aristotle and Frederick Nietzsche will be sustenance and everything that Man has created over the past two thousand years will be marginalized by the simple fact that we are delicious.

This book first attempts to understand the role and implications of uncertainty on community engagement in Muslim communities, and then explores the cultural nuances associated with the demonstration of trustworthiness, and decisions to bestow trust. It further highlights the complexities and implications for Muslim leaders when trying to simultaneously engage police and appease their own communities; the book exposes community perceptions of an over-reaction by authorities that has moved suspicion from a handful of terrorists to the entire Muslim community, resulting in problematic community perceptions that Muslim communities are being targeted by police. The findings suggest that the intentionality of police is a highly significant consideration in trust negotiations, and reveals a number of cultural preferences considered critical to trust negotiations. The book further highlights opportunities to enhance the development of trust and avoid pitfalls that can be problematic to community engagement. The lessons learned seek to enhance the existing body of literature regarding strategies and resources to improve counter-terrorism community engagement with Muslim communities. As the son of an Irish mother and Asian father, he experienced racism throughout his childhood. On the playing fields and basketball courts however, he found acceptance, along with a new-found discipline to fend off the daily taunts. Sherlock represented Ireland in under-21s soccer, captained its basketball team and spent his summers winning hurling trophies in Cork. But in 1995 his life changed overnight as he was plucked from the fringes to become the best-known star in the GAA. He won an All-Ireland SFC title with Dublin, whose supporters gave him his own song. ‘Jayo Mania’ came out of nowhere and spread through the country like wildfire. New opportunities arose from his new-found celebrity status. He became a TV presenter and started to mix with the good and the great, opened shops with Sylvester Stallone and Richard Branson, and gladly surfed the wave of celebrity. His soccer and GAA performances however, declined, and he began to feel as though he was seen as a novelty or marketable product, rather than a sportsman. Over the next decade and a half, Dublin failed to win another All-Ireland and Sherlock became utterly obsessed with trying to get back on top. In 2009, he was dropped from the Dublin panel, his self-worth plummeted, and he started to label his career as ‘fourteen years of failure’. Not content to wallow for long, he began the fight to get his place back on the team. Sherlock’s story is one of a battle for acceptance, a fight against racism, a climb to the highest levels of three sports with a stop off along ‘Celebrity Way’. It is the journey of a boy who was cast head-first into the full glare of the media and became an Irish legend. But more than anything else, this is a story of one man’s resilience.

The Cold War superpowers endeavored mightily to "win hearts and minds" abroad through what came to be called public diplomacy. While many target audiences were on the conflict's original front-lines in Europe, the vast majority resided in areas in the throes of decolonization and experienced the Cold War as public diplomacy- as a media war for their allegiance rather than as violence. In these areas, superpower public diplomacy encountered volatile issues of race, empire, poverty, and decolonization-which intersected with the dynamics of the Cold War and with anti-imperialist currents. The challenge to US public diplomacy was acute. Jim Crow and Washington's European-imperial alliances were inseparable from the image of the United States and put American outreach unavoidably on the defensive. Newly independent voices in the non-European world responded to this media war by launching public-diplomacy campaigns of their own. In addition to validating the strategic importance of public diplomacy, they articulated a different vision of the postwar world. Rejecting the superpowers' Cold War, they forged the "Third World project" around nonalignment, post-imperial economic development, and anti-colonial racial solidarity. In doing so, Jason C. Parker argues, the United States inadvertently helped to nurture the "Third World" as a transnational imagined community on the postwar global landscape. Tracing US public diplomacy during the early years of the Cold War, Hearts, Minds, Voices narrates how US foreign policy engaged with and impacted the Global South and international history more broadly.

A series of laws passed in the 1970s promised the nation unprecedented transparency in government, a veritable “sunshine era.” Though citizens enjoyed a new arsenal of secrecy-busting tools, officials developed a handy set of workarounds, from over classification to concealment, shredding, and burning. It is this dark side of the sunshine era that Jason Ross Arnold explores in the first comprehensive, comparative history of presidential resistance to the new legal regime, from Reagan-Bush to the first term of Obama-Biden. After examining what makes a necessary and unnecessary secret, Arnold considers the causes of excessive secrecy, and why we observe variation across administrations. While some administrations deserve the scorn of critics for exceptional secrecy, the book shows excessive secrecy was a persistent problem well before 9/11, during Democratic and Republican administrations alike. Regardless of party, administrations have consistently worked to weaken the system’s legal foundations. The book reveals episode after episode of evasive maneuvers, rule bending, clever rhetorical gambits, and downright defiance; an army of secrecy workers in a dizzying array of institutions labels all manner of documents “top secret,” while other government workers and agencies manage to suppress information with a “sensitive but unclassified” designation. For example, the health effects of Agent Orange, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria leaking out of Midwestern hog farms are considered too “sensitive” for public consumption. These examples and many more document how vast the secrecy system has grown during the sunshine era. Rife with stories of vital scientific evidence withheld, justice eluded, legalities circumvented, and the public interest flouted, Secrecy in the Sunshine Era reveals how our information society has been kept in the dark in too many ways and for too long.
