Religion has been on the rise in America for decades—which strikes many as a shocking new development. To the contrary, Jason Stevens asserts, the rumors of the death of God were premature. Americans have always conducted their cultural life through religious symbols, never more so than during the Cold War. In God-Fearing and Free, Stevens discloses how the nation, on top of the world and torn between grandiose self-congratulation and doubt about the future, opened the way for a new master narrative. The book shows how the American public, powered by a national religious revival, was purposefully disillusioned regarding the country’s mythical innocence and fortified for an epochal struggle with totalitarianism. Stevens reveals how the Augustinian doctrine of original sin was refurbished and then mobilized in a variety of cultural discourses that aimed to shore up democratic society against threats preying on the nation’s internal weaknesses. Suddenly, innocence no longer meant a clear conscience. Instead it became synonymous with totalitarian ideologies of the fascist right or the communist left, whose notions of perfectability were dangerously close to millenarian ideals at the heart of American Protestant tradition. As America became riddled with self-doubt, ruminations on the meaning of power and the future of the globe during the “American Century” renewed the impetus to religion. Covering a wide selection of narrative and cultural forms, Stevens shows how writers, artists, and intellectuals, the devout as well as the nonreligious, disseminated the terms of this cultural dialogue, disputing, refining, and challenging it—effectively making the conservative case against modernity as liberals floundered.

In much of the theory of meaning, philosophers and linguists have focused on the use of language in conveying information in cooperative informational exchanges. As a result, political uses of speech, of the sort that political propaganda exemplifies, have not been taken to be a central case of language use. In this book, Jason Stanley and David Beaver focus on the political use of speech as a central case, which leads to a foundational rethinking of the theory of meaning. By focusing on the political uses of speech, one arrives at better (and more general) tools to describe speech, as well as a more accurate view of its central functions. More dramatically, it enables us to see the ways in which virtually all speech is political-a fact that is masked by much of the theory of meaning. Stanley and Beaver's topic is speech generally-its function and how best to represent that function. Political propaganda serves as a window into that topic, since its function is not obviously to share information, or even misinformation. They emphasize the importance of understanding how political propaganda works via the topic of the justification of free speech and argue that political propaganda poses a problem for a broad range of justifications of free speech. Stanley and Beaver argue that it is not possible to compartmentalize the political aspects of speech from the non-political aspects of speech, nor is it possible to carve out a neutral deliberative space of evaluating reasons qua reasons. The story begins in Scotland, as the police search for an elusive serial killer who begins sending human organs, with cryptic notes attached, to the Glasgow Metropolitan Police Department. It opens when an unidentified package lands on the desk of Detective Patrick Campbell. At first, he fears that the package might contain an IRA bomb and he calls in the bomb squad. However, he is shocked to find something even more horrific. Tucked inside a Ziploc bag, with a note hanging from it, is a set of human eyes, floating in a sea of formaldehyde. More organs begin arriving, and we feel their frustration as the detective and his task force continue to fail in their efforts to identify the victims or find the killer (now named the Organ Donor) who continues to escalate his reign of death by committing a series of murders with the bagged organs now being found near the victim's bodies. Even though the officers now know the identities of the most recent victims, they are stymied by an ingenious killer, who seems able to anticipate their every move, leaves no clues, and mocks and frustrates them. As each set of murders grows more grisly, and time goes on, they are unable to apprehend him. The suspect grows tired of searching the streets for victims and playing with the police, and decides it's time for him to go international. Next stop New York City. And he begins to wonder if he can find more excitement in New York City. At this point, the killer reveals his identity and readers join him as he commits another series of murders, following the exact same MO and producing the exact same results. As the Organ Donor reminisces about his early life we gain insight into how, over time, he began to evolve into a sadistic serial killer. With a genius IQ, he is able to play what he calls "games" with his victims, and later, with the investigators hunting him so diligently, no one is safe, even when the police, themselves, are targets. Only we know his identity, are witness to his crimes, and are aware of the machinations of his brilliant but evil mindset. The New York police are stymied, until, simply by accident and a nudge from the suspect; they discover that the Organ Donor is the same man that terrorized Scotland months before. When that connection is made, they invite the Scottish police to join them, and a task force is set up between the remaining detectives from Glasgow and the detectives in New York. Perhaps, by working together, they will be able to stop this madness. But, no, the killer continues to goad them, murder their citizens and outwit them at every turn (his twisted sense of humor intact throughout). As we move on in the story, readers find that even a sadistic genius killer can find lovethe last thing he expected to happen. In another of many plot twists, a woman, whom he had planned to torture and murder, is lured to the killer's house. She works as a high priced escort and believes that he is just another client. However, when a strange connection to one another brings them closer together, he begins to wonder if it is possible, even for him, to lead a more normal life. However, as the murders continue, a series of clues are left behind, with a nudge from the suspect, for the detectives to try and figure out. Queer and Bookish: Eve Kosofksy Sedgwick as Book Artist represents the first book-length study to explore the intersections of Sedgwick's critical writing, poetry, and, most importantly, book art, making the case that her art criticism, especially her meditations on domestic and nineteenth-century photography, and "artist's book" projects are as formally complex and brilliant, conceptually significant and life-changing, as her literary criticism and theory. In addition, the book represents a significant intervention into recent debates about reparative reading, surface reading, and the descriptive turn across the humanities, because of its sustained, positive accounts on Sedgwick's books as visual, textural, and material objects. The book ranges across Sedgwick's published output, from The Coherence of Gothic Conventions (1980) to the posthumously published The Weather in Proust (2011), and features her meditations on a wide variety of art-historical topoi, including Judith Scott's queer/crip fiber art; the anality of Polykleitos's Doryphorus; queer Modernist typography; Piranesi's punitive space; Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell's queer holy family; Manet's frontality and thalassic aesthetics; fat and thin aesthetics of various stripes; and the queer photography of Anna Atkins, Clementina Hawarden, and Julia Margaret Cameron; Baron De Mayer, Eugene Atget, and P.H. Emerson; as well as David Hockney, Ken Brown, and her own father, a NASA lunar photographer. The book climaxes with two chapter-length explorations of Sedgwick's own late-life book-art practice: her panda Valentine alphabet cards (c. 1996) and her Last Days of Pompeii/Cavafy unique artist's book (c. 2007). Jason Edwards is a Professor of Art History at the University of York, where he works at the intersections of queer and vegan theory, and on British art history in its global contexts in the period from c.1760-1940. He is the author of the Routledge Critical Thinkers volume on Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (Routledge, 2009) as well as the editor of Bathroom Songs: Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick As a Poet (punctum books, 2017), which includes Sedgwick's uncollected poems. In addition, Jason is also the author of Alfred Gilbert's Aestheticism (Ashgate 2006), and the co-editor of special issues of journals and edited collections on Grinling Gibbons, Joseph Cornell, the British School of Sculpture c.1760-1832, Victorian sculpture in its global contexts, the Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic interiors, and homoeroticism, art and aestheticism in Victorian Britain. Jason has also co-curated exhibitions on Turner's whaling imagery, Alfred Gilbert, and Victorian sculpture more broadly, at Tate Britain, the Yale Center for British Art, Hull Maritime Museum, Lotherton Hall, and the Henry Moore Institute for the Study of Sculpture, in Leeds. Jason's forthcoming book Queer Craft deals with Sedgwick's work as a fiber artist.
