Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Anglistisches Institut I), course: Proseminar: The Roots of English, 28 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Introduction The subject of language contact has influenced the English language during several centuries and in many different ways: the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons that brought German influence to the Celtic people, the Viking raids with Old Norse dialects and the Norman Conquest which entailed a whole new range of words. New words from very different origins heavily changed the English language, moulded it and made it what it is today. Language contact brought about the influence that English needed to develop to an own, independent language. With the beginning of the Renaissance a huge quantity of words began to enter the language. This caused a major debate on loanwords and on whether to regulate, abolish or embrace their use. This controversy is very interesting and still very topical because nowadays again a lot of people see about language influences, especially since the internet has been invented. That is why we want to bring light into this historical discussion and show how important this debate on language was. We will demonstrate that importance by presenting it from a historical point of view, then introduce the most important exponents and finally give examples of words that entered the English language around the years of the inkhorn controversy.
