For many years I have wanted to write a book sharing my story. Janie's Unbelievable Journey: Inspirational Letters Along the Way is Janie Wilkins's true story of life as a wife, mother, and educator. She is a lifelong educator with a host of experiences and accomplishments. Growing up in rural north Louisiana, the daughter of a mail carrier, Wilkins went on to attend Louisiana Tech University and was the first student in Louisiana Tech's history to graduate with certification in library science and as president of Tech's first library club. Janie also graduated with a B.A. in English and social studies from Louisiana Tech University. In her career, she has touched many lives through classroom instruction in English and social studies and by setting up numerous public school libraries in Brevard County, Florida. In her free time, she continued her investment in children by becoming one of World Book Encyclopedia's best sales representatives in the south. She was presented the keys to the city of Dallas for her outstanding World Book sales as a teacher representative. Active in the Methodist church, Wilkins has followed John Wesley's 'call to serve' and has been a shepherd, participating in church missions, leading Sunday school classes and divorce recovery classes. She has also been an active citizen, working polls in local, state, and national elections. She worked hard to help Senator Hillary Clinton secure the Democratic nomination; but when that didn't happen, Wilkins worked very hard to elect President Barack Obama. Janie's Unbelievable Journey is a legacy for her children and grandchildren—a piece of history recorded through photos, letters, and narrative to shine the spotlight on a successful, full life. Her proudest accomplishments by far are her three adult children: Linda, Tommy, and Eric.

While there is little evidence of formal rhetorical instruction in Anglo-Saxon England, traditional Old English poetry clearly shows the influence of Latin rhetoric. Verse and Virtuosity demonstrates how Old English poets imitated and adapted the methods of Latin literature, and, in particular, the works of the Christian Latin authors they had studied at school. It is the first full-length study to look specifically at what Old English poets working in a Latinate milieu attempted to do with the schemes and figures they found in their sources. Janie Steen argues that, far from sterile imitation, the inventiveness of Old English poets coupled with the constraints of vernacular verse produced a vital and markedly different kind of poetry. Highlighting a selection of Old English poetic translations of Latin texts, she considers how the translators responded to the challenge of adaptation, and shows how the most accomplished, such as Cynewulf, absorb Latin rhetoric into their own style and blend the two traditions into verse of great virtuosity. With its wide-ranging discussion of texts and rhetorical figures, this book can serve as an introduction to Old English poetic composition and style. Verse and Virtuosity, will be of considerable interest to Anglo-Saxonists, linguists, and those studying rhetorical traditions.

Other teachers have waited because they are reluctant to try tools or techniques that remain unproven or, as is often the case, lack institutional support. This book is designed to help both groups, so that those with technological expertise can extend their knowledge, while technological novices can "ramp up" at their own pace and for their own purposes. Best Practices for Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning brings together expert teacher-scholars who apply and assess technology's impact on traditional, hybrid or blended, or completely on-line courses, relying on technology as a teaching tool for classroom management and interaction (e.g., Blackboard, PowerPoint, student response or "clicker systems," multimedia tools), as well as student-based uses of technology largely independent of instructors (e.g., social networking on popular sites including Facebook and MySpace). Every year, hundreds of thousands of women become victims of sexual violence in conflict zones around the world; in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, approximately 1,100 rapes are reported each month. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes, consequences and responses to sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the function and effect of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women and girls most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict. To understand the motivations of the men (and occasionally women) who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity. Difficult questions of accountability are tackled; in particular, the case of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities. The book concludes by looking at strategies of prevention and protection as well as new programs being set up on the ground to support the rehabilitation of survivors and their communities. Sexual violence in war has long been a taboo subject but, as this book shows, new and courageous steps are at last being taken Ð at both local and international level - to end what has been called the “greatest silence in history”.
