Integrate the 3Ps for a real-world, holistic approach to nursing care. This first-of-its-kind text integrates the 3 Ps—pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment—into an integrative whole that reflects the real-world of how students learn and nurses practice. This groundbreaking approach promotes a deeper understanding of these three essential and often challenging content areas, paralleling the importance of integration in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care. Its lifespan approach features six major population-based sections cover the key conditions and disorders that nurses are likely to encounter in practice, reviewing the important pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physical exam and assessment information relative to each disorder. Each section concludes with a case study that presents a new disorder relative to the population in that section, reinforcing the authors’ application-focused approach and developing must-have critical-thinking skills.
Provides a comprehensive assessment of the political environment and the state of old-age policy and politics and discusses specific, realistic policy options for the future.
This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes and consequences of, as well as responses to, sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the functions and effects of wartime sexual violence as part of a global political economy of violence. To understand the motivations of the men (and occasionally women) who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity in a tangled web of plunder and profit. Difficult questions of accountability are tacked; in particular, the caes of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities and other crimes.
The use of technology and teaching techniques derived from technology is currently a bourgeoning topic in higher education. Teachers at all levels and types of institutions want to know how these new technologies will affect what happens in and outside of the classroom. Many teachers have already embraced some of these technologies but remain uncertain about their educational efficacy. Other teachers have waited because they are reluctant to try tools or techniques that remain unproven or, as is often the case, lack institutional support. This book is designed to help both groups, so that those with technological expertise can extend their knowledge, while technological novices can "ramp up" at their own pace and for their own purposes. Best Practices for Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning brings together expert teacher-scholars who apply and assess technology's impact on traditional, hybrid or blended, or completely on-line courses, relying on technology as a teaching tool for classroom management and interaction (e.g., Blackboard, PowerPoint, student response or "clicker systems," multimedia tools), as well as student-based uses of technology largely independent of instructors (e.g., social networking on popular sites including Facebook and MySpace). Each chapter will address how technological improvements can be connected to assessment initiatives, as is now routinely advocated in psychology and social science education. The book features current scholarship and pedagogy involving innovative technology that impacts on student learning in psychology and related disciplines, focusing also on student reactions to these novel technologies, and proper assessments of how well they promote learning. This text will serve as the standard reference on emerging technologies for undergraduate instructors.
While there is little evidence of formal rhetorical instruction in Anglo-Saxon England, traditional Old English poetry clearly shows the influence of Latin rhetoric. Verse and Virtuosity demonstrates how Old English poets imitated and adapted the methods of Latin literature, and, in particular, the works of the Christian Latin authors they had studied at school. It is the first full-length study to look specifically at what Old English poets working in a Latinate milieu attempted to do with the schemes and figures they found in their sources. Janie Steen argues that, far from sterile imitation, the inventiveness of Old English poets coupled with the constraints of vernacular verse produced a vital and markedly different kind of poetry. Highlighting a selection of Old English poetic translations of Latin texts, she considers how the translators responded to the challenge of adaptation, and shows how the most accomplished, such as Cynewulf, absorb Latin rhetoric into their own style and blend the two traditions into verse of great virtuosity. With its wide-ranging discussion of texts and rhetorical figures, this book can serve as an introduction to Old English poetic composition and style. Verse and Virtuosity, will be of considerable interest to Anglo-Saxonists, linguists, and those studying rhetorical traditions.

On November 19, 1990, the participating states of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) gathered in Paris to sign the Charter of Paris and celebrate an end to the Cold War. How did the thirty-five CSCE countries, which included the United States, Canada, and all of Western and Eastern Europe (except Albania), the Soviet Union, and the neutral and nonaligned states, escape the clutches of the Cold 'War without a violent confrontation, a devastating conventional war, or even a nuclear holocaust? Janie Leatherman argues that by forging an understanding of cooperative security and embracing the protection of human rights, the primacy of democratic government, and free market economies, the CSCE led the participating states from Cold War confrontation toward a democratic peace.

Everyone has a dream. Having taught school for fifty plus years, selling World Book Encyclopedias, setting up school libraries, and a special chemical library, I have catalogued a lot of books. For many years I have wanted to write a book sharing my story. Janie's Unbelievable Journey: Inspirational Letters Along the Way is Janie Wilkins's true story of life as a wife, mother, and educator. She is a lifelong educator with a host of experiences and accomplishments. Growing up in rural north Louisiana, the daughter of a mail carrier, Wilkins went on to attend Louisiana Tech University and was the first student in Louisiana Tech's history to graduate with certification in library science and as president of Tech's first library club. Janie also graduated with a B.A. in English and social studies from Louisiana Tech University. In her career, she has touched many lives through classroom instruction in English and social studies and by setting up numerous public school libraries in Brevard County, Florida. In her free time, she continued her investment in children by becoming one of World Book Encyclopedia's best sales representatives in the south. She was presented the keys to the city of Dallas for her outstanding World Book sales as a teacher representative. Active in the Methodist church, Wilkins has followed John Wesley's 'call to serve' and has been a shepherd, participating in church missions, leading Sunday school classes and divorce recovery classes. She has also been an active citizen, working polls in local, state, and national elections. She worked hard to help Senator Hillary Clinton secure the Democratic nomination; but when that didn't happen, Wilkins worked very hard to elect President Barack Obama. Janie's Unbelievable Journey is a legacy for her children and grandchildren—a piece of history recorded through photos, letters, and narrative to shine the spotlight on a successful, full life. Her proudest accomplishments by far are her three adult children: Linda, Tommy, and Eric.

Faith soon discovers her mother had participated in an experimental clinical trial to treat heroin addiction. Then Melinda also dies from an apparent overdose. Now Faith is pulling out all the stops in her search for truth—lying to her best friend, her aunt, even the police. This is an invaluable list of about 11,000 Revolutionary War claimants who filed in South Carolina between 1783 and 1786, alphabetically arranged in a single index, with multiple references to the returns showing the page number of the entry book. Since the Index was kept by the Auditor General of South Carolina, this book constitutes an authoritative source for Revolutionary War claims. Also included in the work is a section on officers in the hospital and men of the Frigate South Carolina to whom certificates had been awarded.
‘An enthralling account.’ —Independent ‘A fascinating book … researched with an awesome thoroughness.’ —Daily Telegraph ‘Hampton’s excellent book should be compulsory reading for everyone involved in the 2012 London Olympics.’ —Daily Mail Critic’s Choice The budget for the 2012 Olympic village alone is already a billion pounds short. The likelihood of corporate sponsorship recedes with every day of the credit crunch. How on earth are we going to match the opening and closing ceremonies of Beijing, let along top them? Fortunately, London has been through just such hard times before in the run-up to an Olympics, and in 1948 it showed just how to run a fantastic Games on a tiny budget – indeed, make them all the better for it. Janie Hampton’s book about the last time the Olympics came to London is a tale of female competitors sewing their own kit, teams ferried to the Games on red London buses and billeted in Spartan hostels or even army camps, and the main stadium being hastily cleared of greyhound racing to allow the athletics to take place. The total budget was £760,000, great athletes like Emil Zatopek and Fanny Blankers-Koen thrilled the crowds, and at the end a profit was turned! This is a book that becomes more relevant and ironically entertaining every day nearer to 2012.

Margin notes indicate which language skill(s) (listening, speaking, reading, writing) the technique emphasizes. The technologies included in the guide are: brown paper; overhead projector; opaque projector; slide projector; camera; filmstrip projector; 16mm and videocassette recorder; video camera; audiocassette tape recorder; music cassettes; language laboratory; telephone usage trainer; and microcomputer.
