Spite the Devil begins with a legend of Dutch settlers sailing up the Hudson River near New Jersey in the 1600's. One brave man beholds the opposite New York shore and dives into the icy waters shouting he will make it to that "other side" in spite of the devil. When he reaches New York he names the land "Spuyten Duyvil" which means spite the devil. This is where our heroine Janice Rashco gets her roots. Janice grows up in the 1950's with a strong Irish Catholic faith and relentless encounters with the devil. She receives her education from a small community of Dominican nuns. When the family overgrows their tiny New York apartment they move to Connecticut where Janice finds some disturbing changes taking place in her religion. She begins a quest to find the truth. In the interim of her searching she meets and instantly falls in love with Jack Watkins. They enjoy many blissful years of love. Suddenly this changes with a death in Jack's family. Jack becomes unfaithful. But Janice's love for him never fails. After many episodes of his cheating the two young lovers part ways. Jack moves to California and Janice is drawn to the South of France where she enters a Dominican convent. She is taught a great life's lesson there. But because she is discouraged by what she sees in France she returns to the States continuing her investigation of the Catholic Church and soon meets and marries Matt O'Malley. All the while she never lets go of her unfailing and everlasting love for Jack. Spite the Devil is a heartwarming tale of good versus evil while steeped in history and everlasting love. This portfolio presents intimate case study narratives, providing an in-depth account of DNP best practices for clinical practice. The book covers important topics such as the development of DNP clinical competencies, performance objectives, utilizing evidence-based practice, a DNP approach to adolescent care, caring for the chronically ill, mental health care, adult health care, and many more. The main purpose of this book is to provide DNP faculty and students with a reliable and detailed guide to use when implementing a format to document care provided. This detailed format captures the complexity and details of clinical practice. Key Features: Incorporates descriptive narratives that help readers understand the complex cognitive processes employed during the provision of care Presents information based on actual patient encounters that include the reasons for selecting the case, assessment, care provided, and outcomes Provides evidence for all decisions made in the portfolio, which is "leveled" according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence Based Medicine Concludes each case narrative with the DNP student's own reflection and analysis of how successfully each competency was fulfilled

Weaving Hope is a narrative history of one group of Catholic women religious in the United States. From Québec, Canada, in 1877 the Religious of Jesus and Mary arrived as missionaries to teach children of French-Canadian immigrants in textile industries of New England. Their ministry spread to New York, Maryland, the South, and the West. Primarily educators, they directed academies and parish schools. In the South and Southwest, they added pastoral outreach to their educational ministry. With few resources, the sisters overcame diverse challenges to create a network of service from coast to coast. This book presents the challenges they faced from local hierarchy and clergy, as well as ethnic prejudices, language difficulties, classism, and financial insecurity. Their faith and bold courage are displayed in this vibrant tapestry of a small but significant piece of women’s history in our nation.
