Journey through lost high street landmarks of East and South London in a series of detailed artworks blending map, archive and anecdote with deadpan humour. What do you call a memoir that isn't? In THIS IS NOT A MEMOIR, Janette Parris incisively narrates a journey through lost high street landmarks of East and South London in a series of detailed artworks blending map, archive and anecdote with deadpan humour. Part graphic novel, part recollection, and accompanied by an in-conversation between Janette Parris and Gilane Tawadros, this is an intimate exploration of what it means to have ownership of public space, from Wimpy to Woolworth's via Canning Town. And somewhere in the gaps, in absent moments caught gazing at the sky or a kerbside, an impression of a life emerges-or is that just what she wants you to think?"This book by Janette Parris tells a deflationary yet expressive coming-of-age story in the East End of London. While it may seem fun and superficial, its considerable power lies in how it moves through memories and moments in a witty and light-footed way presented as a roman-à-clef. THIS IS NOT A MEMOIR is particular in the way it conjures a world of the 1970s and 1980s that is lost to most of London, yet still resonates with what it means to grow up as a working class young woman who ends up at art school and becomes an artist. It is a brave book to make, but one that will be remembered."--Rachel Garfield, artist, Professor of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art and author of Experimental Filmmaking and Punk: Feminist Audio Visual Culture in the 1970s and 1980s (2021)"THIS IS NOT A MEMOIR rewards reflection and scrutiny, but is perhaps most strikingly original in its unprecedented combination of stark typography and equally emphatic digital imaging, which together seem to attempt to deliver a matter-of-fact reality in a deadpan voice, without romanticising or dramatising what is nevertheless a lifelong struggle to assume a position, find a place, believe in a self, and eventually try to find a seat within the grand game of musical chairs that ultimately determines middle-class profession, competition, achievement and recognition. Heartwarming Conclusion to the Companion Series to Hallmark Channel's When Hope Calls Lillian Walsh and Grace Bennett have learned so much already about caring for children in distress. It hasn't been easy, but it becomes even more difficult when they suddenly discover that three children have run away. Concerned for the trio's safety, the sisters will do all they can to find the children. But the runaways are not the only thing putting the future of the children's home in question. Lillian is faced with choosing between her dreams with fiancé Walter and her commitment to her sister. Steady Ben Waldin is keen to find where his family settled in Canada and to give little Janie a place to permanently call home. And the sisters receive a pair of surprise visitors that leaves them and their family uncertain. As all of the people invested in the children's home seek to determine their paths forward, they begin to realize that sometimes loving well means making difficult choices.
The motive of our ministry is to teach people an overview of the whole Bible in a way that they will never forget it. In the book, “Only His Sheep Will Raise Their Heads”, we examine prophecies of the End Times and give an overview of the Bible in regards to the church age that we are a part of today. the rapture of the church and the ultimate return of the Lord. “From the fig tree, learn its lesson: as soon as its young shoots become soft and tender and it puts out its leaves, you know of a surety that summer is near.” (Matthew 24:32) If this was important for the disciples, it is even more important for us! We are 2000 years closer than they were. We know from the fig tree that He is giving a spiritual analogy. Who is the fig tree in prophecy? Israel! Israel is the fig tree in the Word of God. What Jesus is bringing out here is, if you want to know prophecy, don’t look at the United States, England, Europe, etc... Look at the hub of prophecy, Israel! Those other nations are important in prophecy but the most important today, is the fig tree in the nation of Israel. We have seen the return of the Jews to their homeland. We know by the Word of God that Jesus is coming soon. How soon? We are not to know. Many years back, and not so many years back, during all of the wars that were going on people thought it was the tribulation and Israel wasn’t even mentioned yet. They were looking at the wars rather than the fig tree. We can look at the fig tree today. It’s doing fine! In fact the leaves are all over it!
So much has been accomplished. Lillian Walsh has stepped out courageously beyond what she'd ever dreamed of being able to achieve. She and her newly rediscovered sister, Grace, have settled three children from England into new Canadian homes and are prepared to place two more just after the New Year, when it happens--another painful disruption. A white lie the sisters used to protect some orphans has resulted in an official complaint and a letter revoking the sisters' permission to manage their little children's home. And unexpectedly, Walter, the young man who has won Lillian's heart, departs for a job in the oil industry without leaving any hope for their future, making her confused and lonely. With more children on their way from England needing caring homes, Lillian and Grace must use every ounce of gumption to keep their mission alive. But when startling information about the past surfaces and a new arrival comes via suspicious circumstances, they'll have to decide what is worth fighting for and what is better left in God's hands"--
Like a modern-day Jane Jacobs, Janette Sadik-Khan transformed New York City's streets to make room for pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and green spaces. Describing the battles she fought to enact change, Streetfight imparts wisdom and practical advice that other cities can follow to make their own streets safer and more vibrant. As New York City’s transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan managed the seemingly impossible and transformed the streets of one of the world’s greatest, toughest cities into dynamic spaces safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Her approach was dramatic and effective: Simply painting a part of the street to make it into a plaza or bus lane not only made the street safer, but it also lessened congestion and increased foot traffic, which improved the bottom line of businesses. Real-life experience confirmed that if you know how to read the street, you can make it function better by not totally reconstructing it but by reallocating the space that’s already there. Breaking the street into its component parts, Streetfight demonstrates, with step-by-step visuals, how to rewrite the underlying “source code” of a street, with pointers on how to add protected bike paths, improve crosswalk space, and provide visual cues to reduce speeding. Achieving such a radical overhaul wasn’t easy, and Streetfight pulls back the curtain on the battles Sadik-Khan won to make her approach work. She includes examples of how this new way to read the streets has already made its way around the world, from pocket parks in Mexico City and Los Angeles to more pedestrian-friendly streets in Auckland and Buenos Aires, and innovative bike-lane designs and plazas in Austin, Indianapolis, and San Francisco. Many are inspired by the changes taking place in New York City and are based on the same techniques. Streetfight deconstructs, reassembles, and reinvents the street, inviting readers to see it in ways they never imagined.
