First published in 1973 Macaulay explores important aspects of the interrelationship between Macaulay’s literary and political careers, sets his achievements as an author within the context of his achievements as a public man, and examines some of the sources of his popularity and success. In doing so, it draws extensively on Macaulay’s journals and other papers at Trinity College, Cambridge and elsewhere. The emphases of the book are critical, not biographical, its essential aims the exploration of the range and quality of Macaulay’s writing and the demonstration of the validity of continuing to approach him- above all in mature essays and the History of England - as a narrative artist. What did British people in the late eighteenth century think and feel about their relationship to nonhuman animals? This book shows how an appreciation of human-animal similarity and a literature of compassion for animals developed in the same years during which radical thinkers were first basing political demands on the concept of natural and universal human rights. Some people began to conceptualise animal rights as an extension of the rights of man and woman. But because oppressed people had to insist on their own separation from animals in order to claim the right to a full share in human privileges, the relationship between human and animal rights was fraught and complex. This book examines that relationship in chapters covering the abolition movement, early feminism, and the political reform movement. Donkeys, pigs, apes and many other literary animals became central metaphors within political discourse, fought over in the struggle for rights and freedoms; while at the same time more and more writers became interested in exploring the experiences of animals themselves. We learn how children's writers pioneered narrative techniques for representing animal subjectivity, and how the anti-cruelty campaign of the early 1800s drew on the legacy of 1790s radicalism. Coleridge, Wordsworth, Clare, Southey, Blake, Wollstonecraft, Equiano, Dorothy Kilner, Thomas Spence, Mary Hays, Ignatius Sancho, Anna Letitia Barbauld, John Oswald, John Lawrence, and Thomas Erskine are just a few of the writers considered. Along with other canonical and non-canonical writers of many disciplines, they placed nonhuman animals at the heart of British literature in the age of the French Revolution.
It has generally been assumed that the political and social ideas of early Upper Canadians rested firmly on veneration of eighteenth-century British conservative values and unequivocal rejection of all things American. Jane Errington's examination of the attitudes and beliefs of the Upper Canadian elite between 1784 and 1828, as seen through their private papers, public records, and the newspapers of the time, suggests that this view is far too simplistic. Errington argues that in order to appreciate the evolution of Upper Canadian beliefs, particularly the development of political ideology, it is necessary to understand the various and changing perceptions of the United States and of Great Britain held by different groups of colonial leaders. Colonial ideology inevitably evolved in response to changing domestic circumstances and to the colonists' knowledge of altering world affairs. It is clear, however, that from the arrival of the first loyalists in 1748 to the passage of the Naturalization Bill in 1828, the attitudes and beliefs of the Upper Canadian elite reflect the fact that the colony was a British-American community. Errington reveals that Upper Canada was never as anti-American as popular lore suggests, even in the midst of the War of 1812. By the mid 1820s, largely due to their conflicting views of Great Britain and the United States, Upper Canadians were divided. The Tory administration argued that only by decreasing the influence of the United States, enforcing a conservative British mould on colonial society, and maintaining strong ties with the Empire could Upper Canada hope to survive. The forces of reform, on the other hand, asserted that Upper Canada was not and could not become a re-creation of Great Britain and that to deny its position in North America could only lead to internal dissent and eventual amalgamation with the United States. Errington's description of these early attempts to establish a unique Upper Canadian identity reveals the historical background of a dilemma which has yet to be resolved. This edition of the book is updated with a new introduction by the author.

The aim of this book is to provide the firstgendered examination of male Irish migration to Upper and Lower Canada withinthe broader contexts of negative stereotypes about Irish violence and Irishmen'squestionable loyalty to the British Empire. Through examinations of key violent episodes and (in)famous individuals,Violent Loyalties argues that beingan Irishman in the Canadas meant daily negotiations with discrimination, ethnicrivalries, the pressure to become more 'British', and having to base one'ssense of manliness on being the most visible 'other' in the colonies. Irish Catholics faced the burden of beingdual minorities - the 'other' religion within the Anglophone world andEnglish-speaking in the Catholic sphere already established byFrench-Canadians. Irish Protestants alsohad difficulties adapting to their new communities, as the problematicassociation with violent Orangeism and rivalries with Scottish and Englishimmigrants, many of whom were United Empire Loyalists, created obstacles in thequest for upward social mobility. BothCanadian and Irish historiographies are sorely lacking in examinations ofmasculinity compared with those investigating American, French, Australian, orBritish manliness.
