Embracing Autism - A mother And Son's Journey is a recount of a mother and son's story from the first indication and the ensuing recognition that something might not be as it should be. It follows the early stages that lead to the first diagnosis of autism and the slowly dawning realisation of what might be the future. It covers early intervention, school challenges, friends, sports, earthquakes, relocating, divorce and entering into his "tweens". It also covers the, at times, overwhelming frustration experienced by parents and child. It envelops the funny, qwerky, sad, angry and hopeful side of autism as seen by a mother who just wants her son to be the best he can and be as equipped as possible to deal with this ever-changing confusing world as he navigates his way through it. It embraces the differences and celebrates one Child's journey with his mother as they deal with the constant and sometimes unexpected challenges life throws at them. There is no cure but there is understanding, there is management and above all there is love.

Being an Irish man was a consistent, contentious issue in the Canadas. The aim of this book is to provide the firstgendered examination of male Irish migration to Upper and Lower Canada withinthe broader contexts of negative stereotypes about Irish violence and Irishmen'squestionable loyalty to the British Empire. Through examinations of key violent episodes and (in)famous individuals,Violent Loyalties argues that beingan Irishman in the Canadas meant daily negotiations with discrimination, ethnicrivalries, the pressure to become more 'British', and having to base one'ssense of manliness on being the most visible 'other' in the colonies. Irish Catholics faced the burden of beingdual minorities - the 'other' religion within the Anglophone world andEnglish-speaking in the Catholic sphere already established byFrench-Canadians. Irish Protestants alsohad difficulties adapting to their new communities, as the problematicassociation with violent Orangeism and rivalries with Scottish and Englishimmigrants, many of whom were United Empire Loyalists, created obstacles in thequest for upward social mobility. BothCanadian and Irish historiographies are sorely lacking in examinations ofmasculinity compared with those investigating American, French, Australian, orBritish manliness. This gap in theliterature becomes even more apparent outside of a twentieth-centuryfocus. Violent Loyalties aims to fill these lacunae in thehistories of colonial Canada and the Irish diaspora.
That childhood is a social construction is understood both by social scientists and in society generally. The authors of this book examine the political issues surrounding childhood, including law making, social policy, government provisions and political activism.; This text examines current social and political issues involving childhood. It looks at the impact of the "New Right" who talk of family values, parent power in schools, irresponsible provision of contraception to young girls and the increase in child violence as a result of mass media. It also considers the response of the caring professions and the "Modern Left" who campaign, amongst other things, for the establishment of children's rights.
A Guide to Expert Witness Evidence is a uniquely comprehensive exploration of expert witness evidence in Ireland. This new book places the expert witness in context, giving an overview of the Irish legal system both civil and criminal, and the different types of quasi-judicial tribunals and arbitration/mediation procedures. Once placed in this context, the practicalities of the expert witness' role are explored. The book explains who can be an expert witness, the scope and the limits of evidence given by expert witnesses, and the function and duty of expert witnesses. A key part of the book examines the role of the expert in a pre-trial context, including report writing, as well as the expert giving evidence in court. The book then examines experts in various contexts, whether in the commercial courts, family law, local authority disputes, or criminal, medical and engineering trials. The book is not only aimed at lawyers but also potential expert witnesses. In this way the book is a truly comprehensive guide to expert witness evidence, detailing not only the background and the logistics but also the practicalities.
