As I go on in this life, a verse from Psalm 16 is my story: You will show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy. That path has taken me on adventures wanted and unwanted, and led to dreams that came true and dreams that died along the way. That is my story so far. Ive come to know that each of us is a story and how we tell our story makes a difference as we walk through this world. We all have broken pieces of ourselves that weve left along the path, but we can decide whether to pick them up and put them together in a new way and go on, or we can go on with the broken pieces hurting us with every step. Thats our choice, and with the help of God and companions along the way, the grace and fullness of healing and joy can come.
This beautifully written book ... clearly explains the application of psychological concepts and theories to health and succinctly summarises key issues. Each chapter also provides a series of vignettes capturing the kind of real-life situations health and social care professionals will encounter in their own practice and a set of thought-provoking exercises ... These will be invaluable in developing critical thinking skills and growing the capacity to provide the kind of empathic care which is the heart of person-centred practice" Dr Wendy Cousins, Course Director, University of Ulster School of Nursing, UK "I have recommended earlier editions of this book and now am delighted to say that this latest edition is even better. The authors continue to clearly explain the relevance of psychological theories, models and approaches to nursing care but now, through the use of frequent reflective activities, vignettes and a 'psychosoap' family, students are also highly encouraged to identify how the theory will help them to become the high quality holistic practitioners they desire to be." Anthony Duffy, Nurse Tutor, College of Human and Health Sciences, Swansea University, UK "This new edition embraces innovation in student learning. The use of the 'psychosoap' provides a structure which is meaningful and insightful. The chapter exercises have ‘realworld’ application and can be used to understand your own and others motivations, beliefs and values. Unlike many psychology texts ... this book offers real 'food for thought' and provides the building blocks which link theory to practice. It will also be a valuable resource for those who like to 'dip in' to a book." Philip Larkin, Professor of Clinical Nursing (Palliative Care), and Joint Chair, University College Dublin and Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, Ireland "This new edition continues to improve the reader's experience, providing comprehensive insight into the complex subject of psychology. It is user friendly, underpinned by research findings and will enable the reader to apply its concepts personally and professionally. It is a text which is well designed for student use and application and it has employed a number of innovative features ... An excellent resource, which I would highly recommend." Siobhan McCullough, Lecturer, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast, UK This bestselling book enables those working in health and social care to learn and apply sound psychological principles in the delivery of excellent, evidence-based, patient-centred care. The emphasis throughout is on the promotion and maintenance of personal well-being and quality of life -for care professionals and those they care for. The new edition features a more engaging and user-friendly format and has been comprehensively revised and updated to reflect the latest psychological knowledge. Psychological principles are also clearly set out and summarised in ways that are easy to read and understand. The fourth edition includes: A unique focus on transferable knowledge and skills applicable in a variety of situations Exercises integrated throughout the text to consolidate learning Examples presented in the form of ‘psychosoap’ characters drawn from the authors’ experiences in research and practice An emphasis on positive psychology and promotion of resilience in the management of stress and negative emotions Reviews of recent advances in cognitive science and issues related to communication Psychology for Nurses and the Caring Professions is a succinct, readable and relevant introductory text ideal for students and practitioners in health or social care.
This book is aimed at those studying and working in the field of health care, including nurses and the professions allied to medicine, who have little prior knowledge of statistics but for whom critical review of research is an essential skill. The book will provide support for those conducting literature-based projects which require the student to review evidence generated through empirical investigations. Evidence-based projects or assignments have, for several years formed the basis of a final year independent study for most honours degrees, and increasing numbers of masters programmes, in health care. Working from practical examples, exercises and illustrations, explanations will be given in (relatively) straightforward conceptual terms. This book is intended as a practical guide and reference book. Bullet points and illustrations will be used wherever possible, and dense text avoided. A detailed glossary of statistical concepts and terms will be provided as an additional resource for learning. The emphasis throughout will be to enable the student to transfer their learning to the research reports they are reading. Using fundamental criteria and aided by a list of key questions, students will be able to make an informed judgement about the quality of the research findings. The examples used will be based closely on actual research data, but essential details will be changed. This approach is intended to avoid problems of copyright and overcome the ethical problem of challenging published research in a forum where there is no right of the authors to reply. As follow-up exercises, students will be directed to references where they can test out their learning on ‘real’ examples, guided by key questions.

They've heard it said, these walls, that walls have ears. They've heard the prayers of thanks for their lack of tongues. Foolish are those who trust the silence, for the walls hold onto memories. They know more than smoke and wine; they know where the body lies. Beth Marasich and her cousin Dani Manette Marasich, both just turning 15, are about as different as their hometowns-Old Town Tacoma and Tiburon California. Put them together for the summer following their fisherman grandfather's death, and watch an Old Town History Lesson unfold. There're rumors of a buried body, bets being placed over who fathered the baby their Aunt Sonja's carrying, money missing from the family fishing business and wine disappearing from the Marasich cellar. Beth's a wholesome girl, into the local salmon fishing scene, playing premier-league soccer, and maintaining her position as favorite grandchild with their grandmother. Dani has an eating disorder, thanks to her fashion designer mother who feeds her supplements for weight control. She wants to get out of modeling and into documentary film making. Old Town's a perfect setting, but Dani will need Beth's help, and Beth's not exactly on board with that.
November, 1932, Burke Bay on Puget Sound - Local Indians called the natural spring burbling up in the forest "Spirit water." Ice Cheese follows the same track as my first book, Bologna Sandwich, Ballet Slippers, and Other B.S. Not to be taken seriously, Ice Cheese may offend some people. It might make you laugh, it might make you cry, and it might make you crap yourself. Hopefully it will make you laugh.
