Sweden was a largely non-maritime society which nevertheless maintained a large navy as part of the armed forces which created a Baltic empire. Many of the resources came from the peasant society which was exploited in an entrepreneurial fashion by a highly ambitious dynasty. For a long time Sweden was organisationally more advanced than its neighbours but the empire ceased to grow and finally collapsed when other Northern powers developed strong states. The book provides detailed information about the strength of the navy in terms of warships, equipment, guns and men and it relates changes in size and structure to changes in policy.

Life is often referred to as a journey. Without a doubt, every person who uses that analogy does so from at least a different perspective and likely a different reason. Sometimes it is because they have found life hard, and the term journey represents the struggle and its length they have experienced. There is some of that factor in our so titling the book. Other times, it is used to express finding life delivering beyond their expectations, and the experience took them where they never imagined going. There is that factor in our so titling the book also. Sometimes it is because life seems mundane, repetitious, and they feel caught in its cycle. There is nothing of that in our book. There is a poem called "Footprints in the Sand" by Mary Fishback Powers that illustrates the caring hand of God she experienced in hard times of life when she saw only one set of prints. Too often, that is all we look for""help in the parts of life's journey we think we need help with. True, we should look for that, but the promise of God to his children is, "I will never leave nor forsake you;" good or hard times. This book was written to demonstrate the truth and reality of that promise made over 200 times in various wordings of the Bible. This book was written""no, had to be written""so every child of God is alertly looking for what God is doing for them every day in ways they have not considered before. Then experience the amazement of realizing their Journey has been part of the Creator's plan from the beginning, who works all things according to his good and perfect will, so that they can know purpose and blessing in life and not just an aimless Journey.

Marine Mycology: The Higher Fungi deals with the higher marine fungi, i.e., Ascomycotina, Basidiomycotina, and Deuteromycotina. This book combines features of a monograph with those of a text. It includes sections on ecological groups of fungi and other topics, such as phylogeny, ontogeny, physiology, and vertical and geographical distribution, providing information on known facts and open questions. The taxonomic-descriptive part contains complete descriptions of each genus and species, together with substrates, range, etymology of generic and specific names, and literature. There are keys for all species within a given genus, and a general illustrated key leads to the individual species. The taxonomic section is based on examinations of almost all of the filamentous marine fungi, and unpublished data on new hosts and geographical distributions are included for many species. The filamentous higher marine fungi are represented by 149 Ascomycetes, 4 Basidiomycetes, and 56 Deuteromycetes. The majority, namely 191 (91%) of the filamentous fungi, are obligately marine species, whereas the remainder are facultatively marine. One new species and seven new combinations are proposed. The yeasts are treated in a separate chapter and comprise 177 species or varieties.

This book deals with the foundations of legal practice in Friesland in the 17th and 18th century, specially with the way in which the Court of Friesland made use of the texts of the ius commune in it's judgements. With the help of the until now unexploited archives of the Frisian Court a selection of civil cases and legal opinions has been made which will not only interest the legal historian but the modern lawyer as well. Legal problems about for example minority, assignment, encumbrances, liability, sale, tort etc. are explained and discussed.The practical solutions of the Court based on Roman law texts taken from the Justinian Corpus Iuris Civilis enlarge the knowledge of the reader and his comprehension of the dogmatic and historical aspects of each case. If possible a comparison with Roman-Dutch law is made and each chapter ends with a reference to modern Dutch laws, illustrating the 'eternity' of the legal problems dealt with. The book also makes clear why the Frisians considered themselves as most tenacious adherents of Roman Law: juris Romani tenacissimi. Convinced of themselves the Frisians members of the Court travelled along the 'pure' Roman highway while the jurists of other provinces and countries often had left the road and taken sidepaths. The book shows us that we in fairness may speak of an independent branch in the big tree of the ius commune: Roman-Frisian law.
