When Mark, an American soldier serving in Germany in the early 1950s, meets Lauren, a young German girl, their lives change forever. In a world still reeling from the horrors of war and genocide, the budding love between a Jewish soldier and a German Catholic girl is controversial and dangerous. It is a time in history that demands the same dedication and focus on duty as in the war years. Both of the lovers are pressured from all sides, and each feels the impossibility of their lovebut neither can deny or forget it. Mark is faced with military duty, a possible court martial, and a threatening sociopath. Lauren is expected to play the role of the dutiful German daughter who follows the path dictated by her father. In addition to her obligations to her father, she is expected to focus only on school, work, her church, and her duty to country. Their very different backgrounds stand as obstacles they cant disregard. Neither is so nave as to ignore the considerable cultural and societal pressure they face. But the heart does not always listen to logic, and soon they are irresistibly drawn togethercome what may. Despite all the many forces they face, can they find the strength to stay together in a world that propels them apart?

French Army Lieutenant Caitlan Dugas, who has already served one tour in the war-torn country, believes the situation is improving when she reenlists and returns to Algiers to be closer to her lover, Sergeant Leo Durant. But when she and Leo are assigned to a special task force organized to confront the radical terrorists of the FLN who know no bounds with their brutal attacks, both soon realize the depths of their fighting spirits as they must battle against the horrors of terrorism. In this historical novel, a dedicated French Army officer who returns to war-torn Algiers to be closer to her lover collides with a destiny she never imagined.

In the story The Blue Hole, young Jefferys spontaneous and dramatic action unintentionally brought about his first sense of identity. In A New Day, Jim didnt realize his transitory situation as he boarded the bus, but a big event was unfoldinghe was losing his boyhood. And in Seminal Moments, Bill only realized twenty years after the fact what happened to launch his successful career. These and other stories in the book are all based on special encounters, reflecting life in passing.
