A unique account of a peasant girl's mental illness in nineteenth-century France Hysteria Complicated by Ecstasy offers a rare window into the inner life of a person ordinarily inaccessible to historians: a semiliterate peasant girl who lived almost two centuries ago, in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Eighteen-year-old Nanette Leroux fell ill in 1822 with a variety of incapacitating nervous symptoms. Living near the spa at Aix-les-Bains, she became the charity patient of its medical director, Antoine Despine, who treated her with hydrotherapy and animal magnetism, as hypnosis was then called. Jan Goldstein translates, and provides a substantial introduction to, the previously unpublished manuscript recounting Nanette's strange illness—a manuscript coauthored by Despine and Alexandre Bertrand, the Paris physician who memorably diagnosed Nanette as suffering from "hysteria complicated by ecstasy." While hysteria would become a fashionable disease among urban women by the end of the nineteenth century, the case of Nanette Leroux differs sharply from this pattern in its early date and rural setting. Filled with intimate details about Nanette's behavior and extensive quotations of her utterances, the case is noteworthy for the sexual references that contemporaries did not recognize as such; for its focus on the difference between biological and social time; and for Nanette's fascination with the commodities available in the region's nascent marketplace. Goldstein's introduction brilliantly situates the text in its multiple contexts, examines it from the standpoint of early nineteenth-century medicine, and uses the insights of Foucault and Freud to craft a twenty-first-century interpretation. The application of Iron to open up new applications for bioresorbable implants is promising. However, modification of Iron is necessary to adjust the required properties. Alloying with Manganese improves the mechanical performance and increases the degradation rate. Further acceleration of degradation can be adjusting electrochemically noble phases to force the anodic dissolution of the Iron-based matrix. Since Silver and Iron are insoluble in each other, Silver phases can exist in an unmodified Iron-Manganese matrix. Silver is biocompatible and provides an antibacterial effect. If a degradable Silver alloy is used, the Silver phases can degrade after the Iron-Manganese matrix. One way to process metals that are not soluble in each other by melting metallurgy is powder-bed-based selective laser beam melting. The small melt pool, strong melt flow, and rapid solidification enable the inclusion of Silver in the Iron-Manganese matrix. To enable selective tailoring of the morphology, distribution, and chemical composition of the Silver phases, a model was developed for the interaction of the insoluble components in the melt pool and the formation of the Silver phases during laser beam melting. The principle effectiveness of anodic dissolution by Silver phases has been confirmed. However, this does not result in an increased degradation rate, since deposits with a blocking effect are formed.

From c 5000 BC to the early 1st millennium cal BC a succession of ritual mounds and burial mounds were built as settlement along the valley sides increased and woodland was cleared. Starting as a regular stopping-place for flint knapping and domestic tasks, first the Long Mound, and then Long Barrow, the north part of the Turf Mound and the Avenue were built in the 5th millennium BC. With the addition of the Long Enclosure, the Causewayed Ring Ditch, and the Southern Enclosure, there was a chain of five or six diverse monuments stretched along the river bank by c 3000 cal BC. Later, a timber platform, the Riverside Structure, was built and the focus of ceremonial activity shifted to the Cotton 'Henge', two concentric ditches on the occupied valley side. From c 2200 cal BC monument building accelerated and included the Segmented Ditch Circle and at least 20 round barrows, almost all containing burials, at first inhumations, then cremations down to c 1000 cal BC, by which time two overlapping systems of paddocks and droveways had been laid out. Finally, the terrace began to be settled when these had gone out of use, in the early 1st millennium cal BC.
