An inside look at the unique balance the Amish strike between tradition and the demands of the modern world. From technology to social forces, the Amish face an evolving modern world. Their facility in determining whether to accept, reject, or bargain with the options that challenge them allows for measured change that sustains their social fabric and beliefs. In Dancing on the Devil's Playground, James A. Cates employs a sociocultural model to analyze this negotiation and its applications in Amish culture. Cates, a clinical psychologist, draws on his extensive experience working with Amish families and communities as a mental health professional, as well as the scholarship of Donald B. Kraybill, a leading Amish expert who developed the "negotiation with modernity" model. Cates uses this paradigm to examine the Amish's principles of assessment and evaluation, their cautious tempo in response to change, and their strategies of critical analysis during negotiations. Dancing on the Devil's Playground features seven fascinating case studies of how the Amish interact with legal, health care, and civil authorities and will help readers better understand Amish perspectives on medical, social, and emotional aspects of life. These case studies include, for example, negotiation with the telephone, services for special medical needs, substance abuse, child sexual abuse, and domestic violence. These essays illustrate the negotiation techniques the Amish use to protect their unique culture while adapting to the needs of the modern world. The Amish adopt, adapt, defer, or decline the changes they face, all while maintaining their traditions and a unique identity that includes an appropriate distance from the rest of the world.
Explores the moral dilemmas faced by various religious sects and how these groups struggled to come to terms with the effects of wartime Americanization-- without sacrificing their religious beliefs and values.

Hyperspherical harmonics are extremely useful in nuclear physics and reactive scattering theory. However, their use has been confined to specialists with very strong backgrounds in mathematics. This book aims to change the theory of hyperspherical harmonics from an esoteric field, mastered by specialists, into an easily-used tool with a place in the working kit of all theoretical physicists, theoretical chemists and mathematicians. The theory presented here is accessible without the knowledge of Lie-groups and representation theory, and can be understood with an ordinary knowledge of calculus. The book is accompanied by programs and exercises designed for teaching and practical use.

This title contains foreword by Eric Van Furth, President, American Academy of Eating Disorders. This guide draws together the latest developments in eating disorders. Together with its companion volume "Annual Review of Eating Disorders Part 2", this resource covers the twenty key topics including binge eating, trauma, self-help, assessment and negative body image. It is a compilation of reviews from leading scientists and clinicians, and is the essential update for busy professionals and health researchers, with a clear emphasis on clinical implications. It also provides invaluable information for psychologists, psychiatrists, dieticians, family doctors, pediatricians, counsellors and educators. 'Very important. Successful. Well respected. Comprehensive. Appropriate for all clinicians, researchers, and trainees who work in the area of eating disorders. A great reference for those needing direction on the current available treatments.' - Shiela M Dowd, PhD, Rush University Medical Center, Illinois, USA. 'Presents information in manageable chunks which are easy to digest. Research is clearly linked to clinical practice. Easy to read. Helpful. Comprehensive. A valuable resource for new as well as experienced clinicians.' - Primary Care and Community Psychiatry. "Last year's Review was very well received, by researchers and clinicians alike, and I am confident that the same will be true this year. Keeping track of the latest developments in the research on eating disorders is a major challenge for all of us. The abundant information that is now available via journals, online reference web sites, university databases, and individualized e-alerts can be so overwhelming that it is difficult to see the forest trough the trees. Integrating results from various sources and translating these findings into day-to-day clinical practice is not easily done. The "Annual Review" truly is the best way to stay up to date!" - Eric F van Furth, in the Foreword.
In December 1863, Civil War soldiers took refuge from the dismal conditions of war and weather. They made their winter quarters in the Piedmont region of central Virginia, the Union's Army of the Potomac in Culpeper County, the Confederacy's Army of Northern Virginia in neighboring Orange County. For the next six months, the opposing soldiers eyed each other warily across the Rapidan River. In "Music Along the Rapidan," James A. Davis examines the role of music in defining the social communities that emerged during this winter encampment. Music was an essential part of each soldier's personal identity and Davis considers how music became a means of controlling the acoustic and social cacophony of war that surrounded them. Music also became a touchstone for colliding communities during the encampment--the communities of the enlisted men and officers or Northerners and Southerners on the one hand, and the shared communities occupied by both soldier and civilian on the other--enabling them to define their relationships and their environment, emotionally, socially, and audibly.
